Regarding size, yes, it does seem small after a few years. The student body is not great looking, either. I'm strongly in favor of the increase in student body, which I think will be from 3000 to 3800. Essential to the increase are the two new residential colleges, which open Fall 2009.

I don't really agree with sreis here. Maybe he's more outgoing than I am, but I've never found Rice's size to be limiting socially.

Really, so the Rice Class of 2013 will have around 4000 students? Sweeet.

How "not great looking" is Rice?

Do you guys know about that thread where they talk about the attractiveness of the student bodies across top schools? lol

^ sreis means total students. It would be outrageous for 2013 to have more students than the other classes combined.

I wish '13 were going to be 4000...

Seriously... then I might actually have a shot at an acceptance.

I guess one of my few concerns about Rice is that it's not as "stable" as some of the other top schools. It's continuously expanding and apparently there are many ongoing construction projects. I don't think it's necessarily bad, but I just don't want to keep on adapting to many changes on campus things.

Most of the major construction will be done - at least the stuff that affects you. The new rec center (yeah! :)) and two new colleges will be built by August. Other construction is in an academic area near the physics building. The school will grow slowly - not big jump at once. As a parent, I have visited campus over the last 6 years (since DD was a HS senior), and every time I go I look around and think, "Wow, what healthy, energetic, polite and nice looking kids there are on this campus." And my kids don't/didn't think it was too small. DD studied abroad one semester, so maybe that made a difference. But there are opportunities to meet people from other colleges (UH, St. Thomas), meet all the grad students (2800?), and get out in the wide, big city. My son travels a lot with his club sport team; again more time away and meeting new people. It's not like Rice is isolated away in a cow pasture miles from anywhere...

The total number of students won't be near that number for a few years anyway.

rice rejected me (i'm from texas) but cornell accepted me...

i think any school will have a lot of students from their own state...is having a car in houston impossible? it pretty much is here in liberal new york

"It's not like Rice is isolated away in a cow pasture miles from anywhere..."

LOL anxiousmom - anything but. :) Walking distance to the museums, Miller outdoor theatre (great outdoor FREE performances), the zoo, the med center - Rice is in a fabulous location. And their commitment to grow the buildings (dorms, classroom buildings, etc.) as the class size grows is pretty amazing.

Resurgambell, did Rice reject you ED or something...? and Cornell's sending out acceptances already?

Yeah, Cornell's admissions is rolling for CALS and a few other schools (NOT CAS or Engineering).

Blueducky, I think he's talking about a previous year :)

lol sorry i'm really kind of paranoid right now

For what it's worth, I would much rather go to Rice starting Fall 09 then when I did, Fall 05. Rice has improved in many ways and I think there are more opportunities than when I started. It hasn't been all good, especially regarding enforcement of alcohol policy (of course, this is from a student's, not a parent's, perspective). The new Rec Center should be amazing. Autry right now is horrible. The workout gym is literally a trailer, I'm not joking. Though I have to admit, before it wasn't much different.

Yeah, I'm VERY excited for the Rec center! When is it going to open? I think I read August 2009? But I would like to tour it on Owl Days...

Do Rice students generally live off campus sophomore or Junior year?

It depends on the college, 1down.

Yeah me too, roflcopter. What are your stats?
