Tell me the truth

I got my Math 2 subject test score today and i got a stupid 710. I thought the test was hard but let’s be honest, I wanted at least a 750. How badly will my 710 hurt my chances at brown. I also have a 720 for US History and 730 for Chemistry. My SAT II scores suck and i was really counting on the math 2 to help.

ur sat scores are great! quit worrying

Chill out. Remember that scores are only one component of the application.

Your SAT scores DO NOT SUCK. They are excellent, even for an Ivy league applicant. They demonstrate that you know the material and can handle academics in college. They will not prevent you from being accepted to Brown.

omg are you guys serious???

i’m so relieved…but still skeptical.

i got:

u.s. history – 710
literature – (670 originally), 730 retaken

taking biology and retaking lit in december. not sure how well i’ll do on bio; i’m gonna study but i haven’t taken bio since fall of last year. and maybe trying to add spanish but i’m not even done with my second year yet. :-/

so even as my scores stand, i’m not completely screwed? seriously??

whitecadillac: Brown only requires two SATs. Unless you are applying to schools that need to see 3 SATs, I would cancel your test date in December and do something fun or meaningful. Your 730 lit school is excellent, superb, outstanding. There is NO NEED to take the SAT IIs this many times. Stop giving so much money to the College Board!!

thank you so much for the compliment, but i’m confused! most people say you should have 3+ sat II tests and you need 750+ on all your sat II’s to get into the ivies. :-/

Who are “most people”? Other kids in your high school?

Look on the websites of the schools you are applying to and see how many SAT IIs you need. Brown says two ([Brown Admission: About the Application](<a href=“Undergraduate Admission | Brown University”>Undergraduate Admission | Brown University)). Why would you take 3 if you only need 2?

You do not “need” 750+ to get into Brown. I can’t speak for the other Ivies. My understanding, from talking to Brown admissions officers, is that they like to see 700+ on the SAT; I’ve never heard a similar preference for the SAT IIs. I know students who have gotten in with SAT IIs under 700. And yes, students even get in with SATs under 700.

a lot of threads in the harvard forum cite “750+” and im not sure if it was a yale or harvard or princeton thread but one of them, someone said it’s really rare that someone gets accepted with only 2 sat ii’s. :-/

Looked at the websites; Harvard and Princeton require 3 SAT IIs and Yale asks for two. So if you are applying to Harvard and Princeton, then yes, you’ll need 3.

Don’t retake the literature SAT II unless you are a masochist – figure out another SAT II you’ll do well in and take that. Or decide not to apply to H & P, and have fun instead.

well i know yale only requires two but i’ve heard all the ivies like to see 3 or more. i think i’ll ask in the yale forum and see if anyone can verify for yale in particular.

i’m not sure if i’m gonna apply to harvard, but i’m for sure applying to princeton so i guess that means i will take at least 3. :-/ as for retaking the lit sat ii, besides MAYBE biology and MAYBE spanish, i don’t think i’d do particularly well in any other category so i maybe should retake it anyway? i’m just scared of “diminishing returns” and all that.

whitecadillac, I’d beware of the Spanish one if I were you. I’m in AP Spanish Literature, and many of my classmates said that Spanish SAT II was really hard (I’m taking it in Dec., so I, personally, don’t know). If you haven’t yet finished a second year of Spanish, the material may be too advanced. But, obviously, I’m no expert.

ahhh ok. nevermind about that then. :stuck_out_tongue: thanks for the info!

Princeton revised their requirements to ask for only two Subject Tests.

[Princeton University | Standardized Testing](http://www.princeton.edu/admission/applyingforadmission/standardized_testing/)

I’ve never heard 750 cited for the cutoff for SATIIs. Unless things have changed dramatically in a few years 700 was always considered the benchmark.

I got a 630 on my Math SAT I and still got into Brown. I had very high scores on the verbal section, and I guess they made up for my low math score. Brown looks at waaay more than your SAT scores. You’re not just a number to the them.

that’s really good to know. did you have extremely strong sat ii’s, though, to balance out the mediocre math sat i score, or like a 4.0 gpa with 10 ap classes/10 ap classes offered?

Yes, I did have very high SAT II scores (800 on both French and Spanish). I went to a French high school, though, so I didn’t have AP classes or anything like that. It’s a very different academic system. However, I did have the equivalent of straight As (I say “the equivalent” because the grading system at my school was different from the American grading system).

I also made it very clear in my application that I love literature and want to concentrate in Literary Arts. I guess the admissions board just figured I’m not a math person. They don’t expect you to be good at everything. Just show them you’re really passionate about a particular field.

^that’s good to know. i’m sure that my passion for film/writing areas will come across so maybe the low math stuff won’t be so bad? do you think that is only the case for brown though? cuz it seems at some other ivies, they might expect you to be good at everything. :-/

Admissions is handled on a case-by-case basis. That’s why no one can predict anything. Every file is read and evaluated and few files are identical. Every Ivy is willing to overlook a weakness if you have something they really want. (Often that something is prowess in a sport.)
