telling colleges about 3s?..4s?

I noticed that a couple of colleges (vandy esp) have a spot on their apps or supplementals that ask for ap scores. in vandy's case it asks for ib scores as well. i am an ib diploma candidate so i have plenty of decently impressive ib socres to list. however, i have also taken a few ap tests and am wondering if i should bother listing these. by cc standards i have not done well at all, but some of these are for classes i didn't even take, much less study for.

apush- 4
ap stat- 4
ap micro- 3
ap eng lit- 3

so should i list these? the apush and stat ones i took the classes for soph year and then the micro and lit ones i just took on a whim. any thoughts??

they shouldn't hurt! at least list the first two, 4s are usually good for some college credit or exemptions from general ed. classes, and the second two are fine! i would definitely list them.

oh wow, i just read the last sentence -- you got a 3 without taking the classes?! list them, that's amazing.

thanks kwolfenden!

Yes, you should list them. Don't let the elitists on CC fool you.

I would not recommend listing the 3's. Since it is optional, list the 4's. JMHO!

If you self-studied something and got a 3, that will not hurt you in any way.

If you took the class and got a 3, hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm......

That's a different question.

but should i mention that i selfstudied them? where would this info go?

-oh and sorry about getting back to this so late..ive been on vacation

You can put AP Literature - score 3(self-study), if it's not obvious from your transcript.

i'd put them down if you passed without taking the class, but mention the self-studied

so getting only 3's while taking the class is worthless on all college apps? great..

"but should i mention that i selfstudied them?"

when they see the courses you've taken, they'll know you self-studied.

Well, considering I got 3's on four tests, and 4's on three tests, no 5's, and Duke is giving me credit for a 3 in calc BC...

List all of them. They are good scores. CC goes too far sometimes.

Thanks for letting people know, some students are thinking of leaving them out for a 3.

Getting a 3 on an AP is ridiculously easier than I thought. I thought I was going to fail AP english no matter what I did despite the fact I got A's on that class... I fell asleep through multiple choice and did only like 2 essays, and I still got a 3. (My school pays for ap exams and makes us take them regardless by the way)

There's a current thread on the Parent's Forum with several points of view on this topic:
