To make a long story short, I’m an African American Male who was accepted into Duke and Amherst, but can’t go because of finances. I recently applied to the University of Pittsburgh very late (they have rolling admissions). I was wondering if it makes me seem arrogant to tell UPitt where I was accepted. I haven’t heard back from them yet- and I’m getting really nervous about where I’m going to go next year.

I'd holdback on telling them where you were accepted unless they specifically ask. If they do, then tell them. But make it seems as though you'd rather go to UPitt than Duke and not because of finances; this is of course only if they investigate the matter which I highly doubt.

It sucks you have to give up Duke. You didn't get a good financial aid package? They're usually good with fin aid. I hope you atleast negotiated with school because most of the time they give you more money.

Pitt is a great school. They have rolling admissions but probably haven't geared up yet. It wouldn't hurt to contact them and ask what happened to your application, but I would NOT mention anything about other schools. It wouldn't affect anything and schools don't like to implicitly be compared negatively to other schools, even if it is Duke and Amherst.

If you applied to Duke and can't go because of finances and then applied to Pitt, EMORY is crying out for you. They are known for their finan aid packages. If you apply there, show a lot of interest since being ranked #20 has given them a bit of Tufts syndrome. Speaking of which, you could also apply to Tufts.

you should always petition for a new fin aid package if it doesn't meet your need.

I'm sorry, I was mentally in the wrong part of the year when I made my suggestion about Emory. Everything on CC lately for me has been for rising seniors, and I got confused. I assume that you have already turned Duke and Amherst down. I would contact Pitt as soon as possible. I would mention why my application was late, but not specifically mention what schools you were accepted to. Sorry about the earlier confusion on my part.

duke's finaid package for me was bigger than emory's, so i don't think that emory would exactly give him a bigger offer (not that it really matters)

Emory is well known as a generous college, but it is amazing how the FA packages can differ from person to person, and from college to college. After the COA and EFC are known and the NEED is calculated, you can find that you have a very high EFC so the NEED is small, or the NEED can be fulfilled mostly with loans. Pitt will have a lower COA, but their FA money may be running low at this time of the year. I would contact them. The app might just be sitting on somebody's desk.
