Telluride Assocation Summer Program (TASP) 2014

AHHHHH I’m so excited! I hope I get in!

I found out about the program on Monday, as a result of my PSAT scores. I’m just wondering, from those who’ve attended TASP, what is the diversity like? Also, what is the interview process like? What types of questions were asked?

Also, is it better/did you write your essays in a formal tone? (versus a more informal/speaking tone)

Hey guys, I received a letter in the mail today encouraging me to apply to TASP, and have never heard of it as of 15 minutes ago. Should I apply? I am a very strong writer, having scored a 5 on the AP Comp and Lit exam when I was a sophomore.

you guys all got things in the mail? i got an email, weird.

@SKTT1Impact, i can’t really say what you should do, but i think it would be great to apply if you’re thinking about it! you’re clearly a great writer (better than me, heh), and TASP, imo at least, is a fantastic seminar where you can learn about things that interest you and meet other people who have the same interests from all over the country. and besides, there’s no harm done in applying, right? :)

@TinyDancer97, a few of your questions are answered in the faq page (which are answered by former TASPers): [Telluride Association: Our Programs: For High School Students: Summer Program for Juniors (TASP): Ask a TASPer](http://www.tellurideassociation.org/programs/high_school_students/tasp/ask_a_tasper.html)
but if not, i suggest looking at the 2013 TASP thread or any of the other TASP threads from previous years, really. it’s got a lot of former TASPers answering questions there, so i think it’s a great resource. hope this helped and good luck!

So on the online app right after it asks for school info it asks about recent awards…are these awards for the school or for you?

@Nnormal - They’re for you.

How long are your essays?

I’ve got three done and they’re all under 1000 words. I’m usually concise with my essays though so it might depend

Are there any essays available that I can read from applicants/past TASPers? I want to see what I’m up against

Google? I doubt any previous TASPers would post theirs though. It kinda subverts the fairness of the application process…

I just found out about TASP today and I understand that it is very competitive. With that being said, does having no significant awards or achievements immediately just sends me to the reject pile?

Also, when is the exact date will we be notified on our acceptance to this program? The website does not list a specific date; only the date it releases scholarships? thanks!

are contractions okay in my essays? i just finished one and it’s…really contraction-y…

I’ve barely found out about this via brochure in the mail, and am super excited as well as anxious about this application. For the book analysis, since they don’t want you to write about literary devices, i.e theme, would I just write about my opinion then orrrrr? AHHHH

I’d assume contractions are okay.

These essays are taking for ever wow.

Also, could someone please explain to me what the purpose of a nomination form is when anyone could apply?

Upon further research, I have discovered that the nomination form is simply so students can discover the program.

Hey guys, I’m also applying this year - super anxious, though!

For the recent honors and awards, how recent do they have to be? and how prestigious/important?
Should we list all the specific medals and certificates we got in high school so far?

Do you guys know approximately how many international students applied every year? Not exactly the number of course, just an amount

@nervousfreshie, i can’t really answer the first question, sorry! but as for the second one, they don’t really have a specific date that you’ll get notified; they just do it so they notify a few people one day, then notify some more the next day, etc etc. they do the same for the interview process, too, so it’s gonna be nerve-wracking :/

@alphabetsoup3, i think they just want you to argue a point about the novel, so it’s not that they don’t want you to use lit devices, per say, it’s more like they don’t want your essay to be an essay JUST about lit devices. so, yeah, i’d just write about what your opinion on some part of the book was, and have quotes and stuff (and maybe lit devices if you need them) to support your point, if that makes any sense…
