Telluride Association Sophomore Seminar (TASS) 2014

Fresh discussion for talking about interviews and other things of TASS-y nature!

For anybody who has had their interview this year, do you know what the interviewers ask?

bump for the threads convenience; I would like to hear from more finalists

@Apollo11 Just wanted to answer your question from the previous thread, my interviewer said that we were having the interview fairly early. Apparently they have until April 14th to have an interview. Regarding your question on this thread, I think it varies per the interviewer. My interviewer’s majors were economics and humanities, which were similar to what I’m interested in and what I wrote my essay on. I was also asked a few philosophical questions. It’s important to just have fun and to be passionate about what you’re talking about. Definitely review your book list though. Good luck!!!

Thanks for the insight, kolanut! I have my interview in a week and I’m so nervous, but at the same time I’m incredibly excited… Have you heard from your interviewer, Apollo?

Hey guys I’m new to this whole College Confidential scene, but I thought I’d add just a thought or two to this discussion. I participated in the 2012 Michigan TASS, and it was absolutely incredible.

I remember being in the exact same spot where all of you are, and I understand how stressful it is.

I think the most important thing to remember during the interview is to simply be you. I know this sounds so synthetic, but it is true. Many people who apply to TASS and TASP have high GPAs, SAT’s, and long lists of extracurriculars. However, not every applicant is able to express diverse thought and a completely new and refreshing outlook on life. Just do what you do, and be who you are. Just be a person.

No contact by my interviewer @doyouhavepie, but @studentwaiting, I appreciate the understanding.

I wrote some killer essays that I think will do well, and I am pretty well versed in philosophies of Eastern and Western nations, economics and humanities (I have some college-level background in those), but the wait and lack of communication creates such an agony in me.

Also, what’s the proper attire for the interview?

Also, what seminars did you guys mark your interest as? I said I was interested in the Indiana one, but the Michigan one, while I really shouldn’t go there (I have no knowledge of theatre), seems to be very interesting

I wore khakis and a button down shirt. Business casual. For my TASS interview it was very fun, as I had to be able to think on my feet.

@studentwaiting:

Thanks, that’s very helpful.

Did you also have a lot of philosophical questions?

It was philosophical, but also a lot of challenging (as in counter argument not necessarily difficult) questions regarding some of my thoughts, opinions and activities. As long as you love what you do, and can defend what you love with logical, concise answers, you are absolutely prepared.

@Apollo11, I said that I was interested in the Indiana seminar slightly more so than the Michigan one, but they both seem super-enthralling in their own ways, so I said I’d honestly be happy in either if I was chosen.

Also, thanks @studentwaiting for all the advice! Nice to hear from a previous TASSer!

@Apollo11 and @doyouthepie I also said I prefer the Indiana program. @Apollo11 My interviewer told me that the interview would be casual-dress. I just wore a dress with a sweater. My interviewer was dressed very casually, wearing jeans and a t-shirt.

@Kolanut:

Thanks!

What were your essays about?

@Apollo11 I wrote one of my essays on “The Fault In Our Stars” (I know, I just love it so much though), for the personal/race essay I wrote about how racism is more opaque today and AA kids growing up in primarily white environments.

@kolanut:

Did you use “The Fault in Our Stars” for the inspiring work of art essay?

Also, I still haven’t been contacted about an interview. Getting nervous.

bump

How have interviews been going?

I’ll be having mine on the 30th
