temp housing

i got this in my email:

"We appreciate your patience and cooperation throughout the on-campus housing assignment process. Unfortunately, we are unable to assign you into a permanent space at this time.

A temporary hall assignment will be sent to you in August. The email will include information as to your temporary residence hall location, as well as if you are a third person in a double occupancy room, in a study room/lounge with other temporary assignments, or have been relocated into a permanent space.

Although we update remaining temporary assignments as soon as spaces become available, it is difficult to predict when all temporary assignments will be relocated into permanent spaces. Space availability and housing application priority date determine your future assignment. Students remaining in a temporary assignment for the entire Fall 2010 semester will have a permanent space for the Spring 2011 semester, and have priority over new incoming assignments for the Spring semester. Residents not relocated earlier in the Fall 2010 semester will receive their Spring 2011 hall and room assignments by early-December 2010."

it doesn't sound appealing.. whats temp housing like? how long does it last? i wanna hear from yall =/

I’m curious as to whether you were supposed to have a room, or were you on the waitlist for housing?
As to what temporary housing is like, and how long it lasts, those are good questions. Truthfully, a third person in a two person room can be rough. The rooms are small enough already, so imagine a third person in there. Probably depends a lot on the personalities of the three people–you could end up making some great friends! The study room/lounge might be a little better. I bet they try to get the third person in a two person room out into permanent quarters quicker though. Some people get moved out quickly, some end up lasting a whole semester I’ve heard. We got a 3rd person assigned to our room when I was in school back in the dark ages, but we never saw her. She opted to move in with friends in an apartment who had a little more space until she got permanent housing. There are always no shows, so that frees up some spots. They have used extra Corps housing in the past, too (like the top floor of a dorm that is not full.) They do try to get people in a permanent position asap.

Just heard the head of the housing dept speak on this. He said that in all his time doing this they have never put three people in a room. They may use corp housing if available or the study room/lounge areas that were originally dorm rooms in the past. They hope to have everyone actually placed within a couple of weeks. He said that there will be people who just never show up for school and others who forgot they had applied for housing. They will also do their best to make your permanent housing in the same dorm as your temporary housing. Hope this helps!

That’s good to hear, but they absolutely have put 3 to a room before…don’t know how long the head of housing that you heard speak has been in his position, but it has for sure been done. Like I said, I was in school a long time ago when they did it, but have heard of it in more recent years as well. It was a modular dorm that I lived in when it happened to us, and they are bigger, so maybe those are the ones that they assign 3 to a room. Would make sense. I’m sure they do use other options first. Clearly the email that btn1229 got said it was a possibility now, but hopefully not one they have to use often…

aggiemom2011, you are correct. I also remember several people that were 3 to a room in the modulars, again, back in the dark ages (early 80s).

I myself lived in a study carol in Mosher for a whole semester because they ran out of permanent assignments before my roommate and I were placed. It was interesting to say the least. I actually got my picture on the front page of the Batt because of it due to its novelty. It was okay, though. I was just happy to be able to get on campus!
