Temple 2024

Hey all ! I just have a quick question. Im applying to temple rolling admissions and i was wondering if i was to do the temple option would i still be required to send in a common app application? Please get back to me as soon as possible! thanks !

@baharzarabi when you apply using common app it asks you if you are sending in test scores or doing the temple option.

accepted today!

Hi Everyone, I wanted to comment about Temple Option and Merit Scholarships. My daughter is now a Junior and applied using Temple Option. I think she spent less than 2 hours on the essays. Her SAT score was 1080 and her unweighted GPA was around a 3.65. She received a Provost Scholarship of $18,000 a year. If your looking for merit and your test scores are below the 50th percentile, go the Temple Option.

She is OOS. I think she only took 2 AP courses and mostly Honors, weighted average was 94.6.

We visited the school. Applied Early Action. Admissions actually called her in late November and asked about her interest in attending. She was accepted the next day.

Okay somehow we missed it in the first letter, and the portal letter was scrambled (I guess it doesn’t work in Safari) but my dd got the Dean’s Scholarship ($14K). ACT 32, GPA 3.96/4.38
OOS, Strong EC’s
She was admitted to Boyer/Dance BFA and Honors

I agree, Temple needs to figure out how to make their documents compatible for smart phone software!

OOS
ACT: 30
SAT: 1300
Pretty good ECs
Great Rec letters
got the university scholarship $5000 a year

Anyone have experience with Temple Financial Aid? I just read elsewhere that they offered zero aid to an instate family with a $0 EFC (prior year).

We haven’t visited Temple yet but with a higher EFC than that, this makes me think we better wait until Temple releases those decisions.

@OceanIsle That seems like an isolated (or falsified) incident (or they didn’t turn in by the priority deadline). Temple gives need-based aid to around 80% of freshmen, and the average need-based scholarship is around $7,000 (keep in mind that since Temple is public they don’t have as much to spend). Temple typically meets around three quarters of need-based aid.

@izrk02 , Really? That’s excellent and hopeful news. I’m glad to hear that Temple may be an option for us. Because of the horror stories of Penn State offering pretty much $0 to everyone, it made it easier for me to believe that Temple is the same.

Thank you for sharing your input!

@OceanIsle If you want more in-depth info, check out the common data set. Pretty much all colleges do it and it gives a number-by-number breakdown of aid (both merit and need-based). Here’s Temple’s most recent one (they only have up to 18-19): https://www.temple.edu/ira/documents/data-analysis/common-data/2018-2019.pdf

@izrk02 @OceanIsle My information was definitely not falsified, though it is based on 2017 results, and perhaps I should have specified that I meant institutional (Temple) grant. FAFSA was submitted as early as was allowed. Perhaps Temple is now giving more institutional grants to low income students, but the data you cited includes all sources of need-based aid, including Pell, PHEAA grant, subsidized loans, and probably work study. 3 years ago my daughter was offered a Pell grant, PHEAA grant, subsidized and unsubsidized Direct loans, small SEOG, and large work-study allotment (way more than any full-time student would have time/ability to earn). There was absolutely no Temple grant, and the gap was large. Of course, this isn’t surprising, as per your referenced data, only 155 freshmen had their need fully met for 2018-19.

@kidzncatz Actually, per my cited source, non-government grants (aka Temple grants) averaged $10,000 among 3,000ish students. These were probably given to OOS students though, since Pell Grants and government grants/loans wouldn’t cover the full/as much of the cost like they would for your D. It does appear that Temple has upped their need-based aid in the past 5 years, though. Sorry for making assumptions about your situation, I wasn’t familiar with the post that oceanisle was referencing, so it sounded false at first.

@izrk02 and @kidzncatz , and I apologize for relaying broad anecdotal information if that confused anyone, and of course I was not suggesting anything was falsified either.

I think the reality is, every situation is unique and every school has its own methodology (which often changes year to year) and we are all at the mercy of what they decide much of the time.

So we crowdsource here on the internet in the hopes of making sense of it or of trying to make an educated guess on what to expect, knowing all the while that we won’t know anything for certain until the schools decide to let us in on it.

As always, I appreciate all of the kind people who share their own experiences and various information to help others try to understand. I greatly value what I’ve learned from others in this process.

DD received her acceptance into Temple. Not sure when the portal was updated… she just took a peak and it was updated to Accepted!

Good luck everyone.

I applied a few weeks ago and they said my application was complete and ready for review on the 10th. Temple is my number one college and I really hope I get in. Hoping they are able to get back to me in the next 2 weeks. My stats are:
3.9 weighted GPA
27 ACT
And I’m Out of State
I get that they look for more then just numbers and I believe my essay is really strong and personal. I have several extracurricular activities and some leadership roles. Do you guys think I have a good chance of getting in?

@Mpatel520 you def match my daughters numbers. She applied back in October and received her full acceptance the other day.

There was a slight delay because of a missing document and we wouldn’t have known unless we checked the portal. An email was not generated to let us know. It went from “we have everything” to “missing one item”. So I would keep checking the portal in case there is a snag.

Good luck!
