Temple Dorms and off campus housing

There have been some questions on Temple housing lately so i am starting a thread in the hopes of consolidating dorm and housing info

my son lives in the honors section of 1300. He likes it a lot and considered staying there next year on either the fourth or fifth floor, which has apartments. he has since decided to move to the View, off campus housing that is literally across the street from Temple. he has heard very good things about the View and although 1300 is decent, the View, we hope, will be a step up. from what i;ve gleaned, he thinks the best dorms are Morgan, 1300, and i think Temple Towers, There have been some issues on the 1st floor of 1300 and i think this year, the second floor has been fine, i believe floors 1-3 at 1300 are for freshman with the third floor designated for honors. i am not sure whether Temple Towers has any freshman housing options.

I think Temple Towers is just upperclassmen. It’s all apartment living - some with just double-bedrooms and some with double & single bedrooms. All apartments have a furnished living room & a kitchen.

My daughter is currently a freshman and she lives on the 1st floor of 1300. Interesting about “issues” comment as I have heard of none.

Next year, she too, will be living at The View. She wanted to go off campus, as the rest of her team other than the freshman live off campus, but us parents really wanted her to be on campus. The View is a great compromise. She will have the freedom of an apartment, but will be adjacent to campus, across from the Temple Police Station.

@zebradome - your D probably lives in the wing opposite where the “personality conflicts” have occurred. My impression is most kids are only aware of what’s going on in their immediate area.

The View looks really nice but unfortunately they don’t want art (or music I’m told) students living there.

Temple Towers is not just for older students. I have heard of a few freshman in my classes (last year) that lived there. The view is nice, but it also has a high rent rate especially since it is across from the Temple Police station, so a lot of parents who fear for their children are willing to pay significantly high rents for the place (don’t get me wrong, the place is really nice).

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/profile/393206/futuredoctor24 any other off campus places you can recomend? or at least streets to look at and streets to aviod?

Here’s a 4 bedroom apt for rent off-housing. Good price too. http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/apa/5342444739.html

My D is a junior at Temple and lives off campus. FYI - while the View is technically “off campus”, it is a misnomer. The View is only categorized that way because it is privately owned. Otherwise, its location would classify it as on campus. My D lives in Temple Nests. They have apartments on 15th between Oxford and Jefferson and on Carlisle between Oxford and Jefferson. The area is still patrolled by Temple police as part of its expanded boundary and has blue lights. It is well lit 24 hours with a ton of surveillance. She uses either the escort service or shuttle if she travels alone at night. She loves her apartment, has a very responsive landlord and is in a great location. The apartments are fully furnished which was a big help to the budget. She is in a two bedroom but they have 2, 3 and 4 bedrooms available.

philaski, could you send me details on the apts where your daughter lives? there is possibility i will be moving to philly for work in near future and as much as junior despises the idea, he may be sharing a 2 bedroom with mom next year. Since i’d be working in Center city, your daughter’s apartments sound like it might work for us.

Here is the link to their website with the contact information. templenestapartments.com The apartments are all students and I am not sure if mom would be comfortable there. If living together is financially necessary, you make want to look into Fishtown or Northern Liberties. Both are very nice places to live with a lot of social activity and an easy commute to both Temple and Center City via public transportation.

oh, im mom and i;d be fine, it;s the kids who would probably not like it

thanks for info on Fishtown though. i’ll cross bridge if i get offered the promotion in Philly. if it is $200 or more cheaper per month for us to have one apartment, kiddo is stuck with mom. i will also give him option to pay the difference since im am paying for most of his housing currently. so if he wants to pick up cost difference for us to have 2 different apartments, i;d fine with that. and if it;s about the same to have 2 apartments, i;d likely just get my own apartment esp if he is willing to visit and take our dog out on any days i can;'t get out of office during lunch.

but re Fishtown, could i safely get there say at 9pm from Center City? and i think it;s close enough i could get back and forth within an hour during lunch? id either be around 15th and market or i;d be at 8th and chestnut for work. my job has 2 Philly offices.

and another question, what public transportation would my son use between fishtown and Temple? i think i can take subway between Fishtown and Center city?

The Market-Frankford El runs between Fishtown and Center City but in the evening, I would recommend taking a bus as they tend to be safer. There are bus routes that run from Fishtown in all directions and your son could use those. many Fishtown residents bike when it is nice out. You also could look in Fairmount which is the area south of campus along (and just behind) Broad Street (for example, 16th, 17th and Spring Garden). The 3 bus runs up and down Broad Street as does the subway (again, I would not recommend the subway at night).

Good luck on your promotion! Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about different areas of Philly. I am happy to help.

@ctl987, my husband and I (separately) attended Temple in the late '80’s. We currently work and live in the Center
City area. Fishtown is a fun neighborhood, but if it’s for you, there are other areas to live in that will be an easier commute in to work. Let us know if the promotion comes through.

Thanks to both,. yes, Fairmount is an area i am looking at too. i know that area already. never been to Fishtown but i have a general idea ot its location. i will get back in touch if i end up in Philly! son is pulling me for to end up in another city! the stinker
