Hi everyone! I was just awarded a full tuition scholarship and an $8,000 summer stipend to Temple University's Honors College....I was just wondering if this is prestigious and a big deal type of thing. If it could match up to a certain university separately, what would it be? Thanks! Hope everyone has a nice rest of the day :)

Bump!

I know this isn’t related to your question, but was your timeline between submission of application, acceptance and receiving the packet with the scholarship info?

it is not necc that prestigious such as say going to Yale or harvard. however, it is a great oppurtunity and the impression i have is that Temple upped its scholarships to attract students like you. the full tuition is a great deal. my son has this scholarship too. it looks like with room, board, and misc. expenes, it will cost our family about 17K to have our son at Temple this year. if you have done any college price shopping, this is a great deal for college costs these days. if you lived in philly and commuted ,you go to college for close to free. The stipends are also a great way to supplement any special projects you want to do over the summer. my kid and the rest of the honors kids are treated very well at Temple. the honors dept keeps an eye on them, they can all live close to each other if they want too, and he gets freuqent emails about various options, not just from honors but also from his school, which is Communications.

I’m not really sure what OP’s question is…what is an equivalent university? In what way? USNews rank? A particular major or program? Other schools around that size with a similar rep in Philly?

Is the full tuition scholarship w/stipends a big deal? It certainly is to our family.

hi, i wanted to post more on this too esp to the op. if you have grad school aspirations, including for medical school or another profressional school. one key for those programs is being able to afford 7 to 10 years of college, not just 4. so i recommend to many to keep your undergraduate costs down as low as possible. when you get out of law school, employers are curious, to some extent, where u went to law school. they could care less where you got your undergradute degree. i suspect this may play into med school too. So is Temple as prestigios as an Ivy. Well, no, but few places are. is it a well respected school that has connections? Absolutely. And the stipends for undergraduates are unusual for an undergraduate to get. There are some out there at some other colleges but it is not a lot of colleges. These can help you get your foot into teh door for prospective employers as it gives you the option to intern for them at no cost to them and you still have some of your living expenes covered. Again, amazing opportunity. You obs have good stats so shoot for the stars, but even if you get into one of those star schools, continue to give Temple a good hard look.

what were your stats for full tuition?

the full tuition stats are automatic for US citizens, you can get on Temple admissions and find out but i think this year they are at least 1420 for the SAT and at least a 3.8 GPA(you need both). i think the ACT score is 33 and you only need the SAT or ACT in that range. also, they will do some average of your CR and writing score if ur writing score is higher than the CR(to your benefit). but get on Temple admissions to learn more, i am doing this from memory.

ctl’s right except the ACT is still a 32. And they recalculate GPA with added weight for some courses and take out non-core courses.

Hi College 4023,

Congratulations and welcome to the honors program (if you decide to accept). I’m a current student in the honors program and can’t tell you how much I love. I believe that everyone that I have talked to (my fellow peers in the program), have only amazing things to say. The honors program is very highly regarded in the Philadelphia Area and many companies in the area know of its high standard. It might not be an ivy league program, however, I know quite a few students who have actually turned down Penn and Cornell for Temple Honors especially because of Merit and the summer stipends. Temple Honors also has unique opportunities that you will not be able to get as a Temple University student or even a student at Penn. One of my classmates and a good friend of mine was actually sent to the United Nations as a University delegate and sat among a group of 100 delegates (5 from the US, 1 was the actually Full time youth USA delegate, 1 from Harvard, 1 from Princeton, 1 from Stanford, and 1 from Temple). Also, the honors program is really supportive in whatever you want to do whether it is taking a class in the complete opposite direction of your major or creating a student organization. There is a lot more that I can enclose, but I don’t want to be the person that keeps talking about it. Let’s just say that I could have transferred to some “prestigious schools”, but I decided the my honors experience with small classes sizes and was more beneficial. Feel free to PM me

i am a mom but i feel like my son is getting a more customized education being in the Honors program and I agree they are very supportive. He gets a lot of emails about various opportunities. i know kids not in Honors and my kid has a much better eye kept on him than the non-honors kids. He liked his honors classes and enjoyed the motivation level of the other honors students, By living in the Honors section, he has also had a greater chance to know and meet other students.

I hope you guys stick around, I bet there will be a lot of questions about T H program in the coming months. I know I want to do a lot more research.

I usually get really busy during the semester and often forget to log on here. However, feel free to call into the honors program and see if you can talk to someone in HATT (Honors Admissions & Transition team). It is a group of student that volunteer their time to talk to incoming students because they love the honors program. You may feel free to inbox me questions.
