Both are kind of her favorite. She’s really torn. I don’t think she wants to be far away from familiarity, bf, friends at home, etc. by going to CO (4 hour plane ride from home) , although she loves the CO environment. But at the end of the day, I think it might be CSU; we’ll see.
Thanks for helping me talk this through and for flagging the honors piece. Maybe she’ll apply for sophomore year…!!
I don’t agree with MYOS with her stereotypes of CSU. It is not evangelical. Both Boulder and Ft Collins are the county seats and judicial centers for their counties, and both are actually very similar. Some of the most conservative people I know were raised in Boulder, both in politics and religion. Boulder has IBM and Ball Aerospace and Fort Collins has Intel. The people living in the areas are very similar. Greek participation at both schools is about 13%, which is about average for schools of their size.
I know several students at CSU, including two majoring in theater. They could have gone to UNC in Greeley which is only 30 miles to Ft Collins and has a more ‘known’ theater dept., but they wanted all the other things CSU offers - big sports, hundreds of courses in all majors, the more urban lifestyle. Since CSU offers the WUE exchange, it has more students from western states than Boulder
Thanks twoinanddone! Appreciate your comments and insights. D likes fun, school, spirit & activity so it seems like CSU checks those boxes!
For what it’s worth, I think CSU would work better than Temple if there’s no Honors College at either, if only because she’ll discover a new area and a new culture And, it’s cheaper.
An idea:
Could she email the head of the department she wants to major in as well as the Head/Dean of the honors college, highlighting why she’s a perfect match for their philosophy, her favorite authors/readings, etc.? As it makes the most difference to Freshmen and sophomores, an appeal of sorts. Since she got a big scholarship and is into Liberal Arts, you’d think they’d want her to join… I can review her letter of Appel if you wish.
Wow, thanks MYOS!
The thing - her app for honors college was due Feb 1. She submitted end of March (I know…!). As part of app she did three 500 word essays, including one on why the honors college is a good fit and what she would contribute to the program. So I think she pretty much gave them all she had in support of her late app, but it was still a no go (presumably b/c at least in part they were filled up by then? Optimistically!).
In light of that do you think an appeal is worthwhile? Also, she is an undecided major so doesn’t have a connection to a specific department…
Maybe a letter saying “Please consider me if a spot opens up…?” Thinking with the whole COVID situation that might be more of a possibility this year than any other…?
