Temple or Villanova?

The week after Easter I will be doing some college visiting, but we will only be in Philadelphia for one day. I'm already visiting UPenn, but I can't decide whether to visit Temple or Nova, since I can really only visit one of them.

I'm interested in the statistics/actuarial/economics areas. Does anyone have any input that can help me to decide which of these two I should visit? Thanks in advance.

NOVA definitely. From what I've heard, Temple is in a bad area. Villanova is also a much better school.

If you're looking at Penn, the more "peer" schools (that would have a lot of applicant overlap with Penn) that are in the Philly suburbs (like Villanova) would be Haverford College, Swarthmore College, and Bryn Mawr College.

Villanova since ur already visiting UPenn. Its a "peer" school compared to Temple which just isn't in the same league even tho its a great school.

While I can't speak about your academic questions, just a note about the social life/aspct of Villanova.

I just want to caution you about Villanova (disclaimer: I don't know much about Temple). Villanova is extremely strict and religious - required religious courses, imposed curfew, absolutely no drinking, no co-ed dorms at all (a guy needs permission to go to a girl's dorm), and more! This is what I hear from someone who transferred out of Villanova (for reasons other than that, of course). I'm obviously no Villanova student, but if that is what you look for in a college, then that's fine; if not, just a word of advice to really visit and see what it's like, to know what you're signing up for before it's too late.

Villanova really isn't as strict as it's perceived - it's no party school, but I've been to several parties there.

For what it's worth, in the Philadelphia area, Villanova is not considered a better school than Temple. Anyone who says otherwise does not live in the area, and relies solely on the silly US News rankings.

I have never heard of Villanova being a better school than Temple. The rankings might be there, but I would recommend checking for yourself. I would be totally against Villanova because I do not want to go to a religiously affiliated school.

Well everyone on this site would, simply because they weigh rankings as the end all be all.

Where in the Philly area?

Yeah you must be a Temple student then... I would definitely consider Nova to be the better school...

I didn't ask you which you thought was a better school...

jckund is allowed his/her opinion. You're certainly free enough with yours.

ilovebagels beat me to it. Haverford would probably be the school of most interest to the OP. Between Temple and Villanova, Villanova has the stronger business program, although I disagree that Villanova is necessarily a better school overall.

I didnt say they were not, I'm saying one person's opinion isnt indicative of the overall opinion of the local population.

Also, while HC is a great school, being in Haverford/Ardmore/Bryn Mawr for four years would suck.

So you're saying people are put-off by the location? Well I cant argue that, but to say it has a mixed reputation is silly. The school is very well respected in the area, and it doesn't hurt that if you ask a random college graduate in Philly where they went, odds are they went to Temple.

I agree with diontechristmas here. I grew up in the Philly suburbs (my public high school was across the street from 'Nova) and then spent 5 years at Penn and I hold Villanova and Temple in the same (high) regard. If anything I'd hold Temple undergrads in higher regard as, on average, they've overcome more hardships to get in (and stay in) college than the Villanova suburbanites.

But you can't go wrong with a Big 5 school ;) woooo!!

Radnor or Harriton?

Radnor (or "Badnor" as those fiendishly clever Conestoga kids call it ;))

Well booooooooooo. I went to LM ;)

It's okay, nobody's perfect ;)

Anyway, yay Temple. But mostly, yay Penn (me me me!)
