Long story short...I was accepted to Temple U for a second BS in engineering. I already have a BA.

Opinions on TU's engineering program? It's not even ranked in the USNWR, but I get the impression that for eng. that doesn't really matter like it might in other programs.

it does matter to an extent, if you go to an engineering school that falls within the top 100, it may not matter as much where you go, but if Temple isn’t ranked, I might have some questions about whether the engineering program is held in high esteem anywhere.

I’m pretty sure that our eng program is relatively new. It’s not bad my any means (I dont think Drexel is that much better for so much more money), but it’s certainly not our specialty. That being said, I know several very successful Temple eng grads who worked under my dad who were very happy with their experience.

I guess I’m simply curious about…I’m very familiar with law school prestige. How about engineering school prestige? how important is it?

It’s only important for the first job, as long as the school’s engineering programs are ABET accredited (important for becoming a professional engineer), you should be fine anywhere you go for engineering

…but the first job is extremely important, no? I mean, a good first job placement probably makes climbing the ladder easier.

I would ask the school where their engineering graduates work after going to Temple if that is an area of concern

uh, so, I heard that it doesn’t matter so much as I pass a “fundamentals of engineering” exam. true/false? how much does recruiting/connections matter?

in order to pass the “fundamentals of engineering” exam, the program at the school has to be ABET accredited. The only majors at Temple ABET accredited are Civil, Electrical and Mechanical so as long you major in one of those three fields you will be fine.

While the exam doesn’t matter, recruiting does make a difference between MIT and Temple engineering.

uh, yeah, so recruiting on campus is really important though…?

I would say that there is a difference between so-called “recruiting” quality but as long as you show that you are qualified (good grades, lots of work experience), you should have no problem finding a job anywhere

may I ask, is Temple the only school you are considering for engineering?

loudpainting, considering your unhappy visit to Philly, as you seemed to describe it on City-Data, you should probably cross Temple off your list.
