Temple University Class of 2026 Discussion Thread

Nope. Haven’t heard anything other than the due date was extended to the 15th, 3 days ago. Still waiting.

I heard that they would be making decisions on portfolio scholarships in late March/early April.

Would you share what are the other programs you are deciding between?

My daughter’s other schools are SUNY New Paltz and UMass Amherst.

As a parent of a child at Temple, I would like to tell prospective students and parents to do their due diligence on campus safety. I only have good things to say about the education but the last three years the amount of violent (shootings, assaults and car jacking) are daily. Sometimes, like this past weekend, it’s was multiple shootings a day. This is ALL occurring within the Temple patrol area, exactly where the students live. There’s a police shortage that they can’t fill due to low pay. So, just be aware that the problem is going persist. Check out the Temple Safety FB pages as you will see parents and students are scared, furious, disappointed at the way Temple is sweeping the crime under the rug.

Sharproku, do you think the Drexel area is safe? I know they are in different parts of the city.

My daughters friend graduated from Drexel 2 years before the pandemic and she said compared to Temple, it was relatively safer. It was in a better part of the city. She and her friends would not go to visit Temple because they were afraid. So, that’s all I really know first hand. But, what has occurred in North Philly is insane. The types of crimes with guns just about every other day and multiple times on the weekend INSIDE the parameters where Temple students typically house and Temple says they “patrol” is like living in a war zone. I’m certain Temple is not talking about this at orientation and campus visits. Many parents on the Temple safety pages feel they want to get the word out to others so people are aware. If you get the “citizens app” it will alert you to the amount of crime in the Temple zone. Be prepared to have it ring day and night. Many parents end up deleting the app because it’s so stressful. Make up your own minds, but just be sure to try to check out other sources as Temple is not being forthcoming with their violent stats.

I have posted about the escalating violence around temple before. I’m warning parents again. Take this seriously. It is very scary and I bitterly wish we had the ability to transfer out. My son is too far in to transfer but this is not the experience any student needs to have at college. He cannot wait to graduate and get out. Do not send your kids here. It’s absolutely not worth it.

Waiting on response from Cooper Union and also highly considering MICA which she’s already been accepted to.

this is precisely why i exercised parent veto for TU. I pray for the safety of the students, staff and TUPD.

Thankfully my son picked another school. This is all terribly tragic.

My D also accepted at these 2 programs but SUNY a bit too remote, also accepted at Syracuse but with no $ it is so expensive. The program at Temple is so good- just really concerned about the safety.

We visited Temple for the first time this past weekend for their Temple Days events. After speaking with students and some parents of students (currently attending) I felt much more at-ease with the safety concerns and believe that the university is taking the matter seriously. The topic was also discussed in a few sessions that day. The consensus was that you need to carry your street smarts with you as you would in any large city. No one I spoke with felt stifled by the increase in crime, increase in shootings. Kids are still leaving the campus going to museums, going into downtown Philly (e.g. Center City), etc. We live in NYC and north Philly did not feel less safe. Center City had its sketchy parts as do most large cities. I would be comfortable sending my kids to Temple if that’s where they want to be. I believe the concerns would be comparable for parents sending their kids to NYU or Columbia. I am not writing this to discount parents’ concerns but rather maybe help ease some of them.

Anyone else received tyler admissions scholarship? I got 4k non-renewable. I was surprised at the “one year only”. Is this typical for the Portfolio scholarship?

Nothing yet. I was told that we wield get an answer no later than the end of the week, hopefully sooner.

When did you receive notice of the 4k?

My D has not received anything yet.

Still no word on the portfolio scholarship here. The FA office had corrected something on my daughter’s FAFSA, and the admissions office and Tyler has kicked in some additional smaller grants to fill in the gap ($13k per year in total—a big improvement over the original $5k), but none of these are from portfolio scholarships.

I’m hoping they will continue to grant more scholarships and funds to students. I’m sure as they’re seeing what their deposit rates are and redistributing additional funds to students.
