Temple University Class of 2026 Discussion Thread

I’ve reached out to SFS asking for more money. I’m sure I will be attending Temple, but am afraid if I commit before hearing back about more aid, they won’t award me anymore. Should I wait to commit till after I exhaust all ways to get the most aid?

In terms of waiting to commit until they have notified you of merit/money financial aid, that is what we have done. But my daughter got her acceptance back in December, and everything has come though bit by bit. It’s sill not quite enough, compared to her other top choice. So, we are hoping the portfolio scholarship (just for Tyler students) comes through.

I will add that even though all of these grants were called merit, the initial merit was very small when our EFC on the FAFSA was artificially high. The additional money started coming in after we filed the 2 appeal forms (one for merit and one for financial aid). And they only just get us to our new EFC if my daughter takes out the full student loan. So, there isn’t an abundance of “great student” money. They are using merit money mostly to meet need. That is my impression anyway. Some of this money has come from admission and some in a Tyler dean’s scholarship.

Definitely commit by the May 1st deadline if you want on-campus housing.

Two days ago! This is because I kept following up via email with the admissions officer there. I’m now deciding between Tyler and UArts. To my surprise, the net price is similar with UArts being slightly more expensive. But Uarts has illustration major and is in the more central part of the city. Safety around Temple campus increasingly disturbs me… And Tyler offer a one-off scholarship is a turnoff… But i do love their Foundation program and like the GAID overall. ARGH decisions!

I have a friend who went through this exact issue. She ended up choosing Temple because in her opinion the facilities were significantly nicer. Have you had a chance to visit both?

How long did it take for them to update your financial aid after you submitted your appeal? I just submitted mine yesterday for both merit and change in family circumstances.

Thanks for sharing! I have to agree that Tyler facilities are top notch, easily the best out of all art schools I got to visit. UArts facilities are not as good but also way better than SVA (and SVA has amazing illustration/ design/ animation programs despite the lack of facilities). Tyler facilities, its foundation program and more hands on traditional techniques in studio arts are the biggest reasons I want to attend. GAID as a program seems great but i feel that’s not the type of work I want to do. UArts seem to better prepare students for careers specific to Illustration which is what I want to do. Maybe i’ll take the foundation program at Tyler then transfer to UArts for Illustration courses!

Thanks for posting this info to keep the information out there. Just yesterday there were 4 assaults,/robberies with guns on students on campus housing. I appreciate this forum is here and available to present facts that many prospective students and parents are interested in but may not be made readily available by Temple. Please check out TUPD FB page if you want to follow the crime activity.

I think accurate information is very important. I’ve done a lot of research and I follow every social media outlet related to crime reporting in and around the Temple campus area.

It’s important to note that all the crimes you’re referring to did not happen on the TU campus. Temple’s main campus has a patrol zone that encompasses a multi-block radius around the campus that is patrolled by TUPD and by Philadelphia PD. When crimes are reported as “on campus”, 99% of the time they are actually off campus, but in the patrol zone. I’ve noticed in recent weeks, even crimes outside the patrol zone are being reported with notes referencing how far outside the patrol zone the crime occurred.

Safety is a real concern in the community around the campus. Let’s make sure we are sharing accurate information when we express those concerns.

Current Temple Honors parent here. My D worked the ETDs people have been discussing as an Honors ambassador. She has never felt unsafe. She lives on campus in Honors housing. Happy to answer any questions here or feel free to send me PMs. Older D recently graduated from Temple engineering / Temple honors and has a great job.

Unexpectedly, a couple of weeks before the deadline, my OOS kid received a ‘Class of 2022 Award’ today’ $5K per year. Not clear if it is applied to tuition or can be used against room & board.

My son just received one, too. Very telling.

Certainly is thought provoking, though.

My daughter did also! She was deciding between Rutgers and temple last night with a pros/cons list…and that email came through so she took as a sign and committed. Should I be reading into why she was awarded 10 days before decision day? Did everyone get this? It’s on top of 9k merit award from December. She is a submitted high SAT score (for Temple) so I thought that may be it. Or did everyone get this award?

“Did everyone get this award?” - that is an excellent question. The wording makes it sound like just about everyone who applied and was accepted is being offered it:

" We are excited to present your student with our Class of 2022 Award, which is valued at $5000 per academic year. This award is specific to our newest Owls who will be joining our nest this August."

I can only assume that the bad press generated by the violence in North Philadelphia has numerous students backing away from Temple. This is likely a last ditch lure. It is the only thing that makes sense. With two weeks to go, you should have a good take on your class. If it is filled, you are not giving out free money just to be magnanimous. To commit this much money to enticement, the numbers have to be really poor.

All that being said, Temple was in my son’s final two and though he is committed somewhere else, this much money is worth serious consideration.

We are in state and got $2500 award yesterday

Thanks for the information, smittyj7575. Was it the same message I posted in the thread above?

D did not get this additional offer. She has 14k already (oos) but nothing else new. I don’t know if it would make a difference at this point.

Same. 14k merit plus 2k from Tyler but nothing else new. She still has not decided!!!

Wow, this is all over the place. I am just trying to follow Temple’s logic here. Perhaps they felt that $14,000 (mom2cats) and $16,000 (txmomOf3) was sufficient enticement?

I really appreciate everyone posting their information. This is fascinating!

I left my son at the house (Spring break) drumming his fingers on the table. The school he committed to has his major, which is why he committed there. Temple does not have his specific major, but has enough courses to get really close - at least close enough to get into grad school. Temple was always his favorite campus and he loved the idea of traveling by train from NE rather than planes (he does not mind planes, just hates the process).

Going to be a long weekend…

With 14K in scholoarships now, my daughter committed. Was tough - Delaware, Temple, or Rutgers (no merit at rutgers which is not suprising, and very little at Delaware.) I follow the Temple secruity page on facebook and the messages are all over the place about safety, but one thing is for sure, the kids seem to love it and there is a lot of school spirit. She is excited!

My son did not receive any additional scholarship money. He already has $19,000/year in merit ($18,000 from Temple and $1,000 from Fox), but I did check his portal after seeing all of these posts.

He has already committed elsewhere, but since the Temple portal doesn’t have a “decline” button, I guess that there isn’t any way for Temple to know this!

Best of luck to everybody who is Temple bound!
