My son was accepted into the Temple Honors program for engineering. He received a 10K a year 40K total scholarship. He was also accepted into Penn State University Park Engineering (waiting to hear about Schreyers Honors whether got accepted) and was deferred for GTech (should hear by Mar whether accepted or not). From research I know that Penn State’s engineering program is ranked high compared to Temple but also without any scholarship will cost a lot more than Temple. We live in Pa but Penn State still would be 36000. My question goes out to anyone who can tell me if attending Temple will seriously decrease his ability to get a job in the field of engineering after he graduates? Also if anyone is currently attending Temple Honors for engineering any feedback about your experience/internships/quality of program etc would be greatly appreciated. Does being in the Honors program help in getting internships? Does Temple offer much help in landing internships or jobs?
I wish I could answer your question, we are in the exact same position, with the identical scholarship at Temple including honors and Penn State. Penn State is quite expensive. We like that Temple offers smaller classes, an engineering semester in Rome and the honors living at a decent price. Do you plan on attending either for an admitted students day? We are and hope to have lots of questions answered. I’ll post what I find out here. Still waiting on several RD decisions that would trump Penn State but not necessarily Temple at this point. Until we see Penn State for ourselves, we have doubts about it because of the size and drinking culture.
Hi, I will try answering your question since I have a lot of friends who recently graduated from the honors program (engineering majors). I honestly can’t recall a friend who graduated in May 2017 who did not get a job within three months of graduating. In terms of employers, I know many of them went on to work for Boeing, Lockheed, Microsoft, and some of the other major engineering firms. Penn State does attract some employers that do not often visit Temple but living in Philadelphia and being in the honors program provides opportunities you might not receive at another program. I would reach out to the honors program and ask what honors alumni in engineering are up to these days. In terms of the honors program, Most of the kids that have graduate in the past five years, are brilliant. Over my four years, kids went to Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge, Stanford, Temple, and some of the most prestigious programs in their respective fields or even top employers. The sum of my honors program pitch is that honors will support you achieve what you went as long as you put in the work.
