Temple University Musical Theatre Emphasis

stagemom23 - We met your daughter at the auditions. She is delightful!

dawww schucks persevere! Thanks! Hope she didn’t talk your ear off!!
Good luck to your D in all her auditions!! :)

Stage mom,

Thanks for the program information. Voice is my son’s strongest area, but it is also the area that he most wants to develop. It sounds like he may be able to add some more voice lessons and perhaps participate in one of Temple’s choruses if he is lucky enough to get accepted to the program. Will be biting my nails waiting until March!

stagemom23 - we did talk to her a lot. She seems to have same philosophy we have about what is important in a program. And she was able to talk to my daughter about the honors program and the dance minor:)

persevere-
glad she could help!! It can be very tough and confusing doing both the honors program AND a minor with the MT concentration but it can be done! I know my D really wanted an academically challenging college experience but still longed for a conservatory-like approach to her MT studies. She had orginally accepted a spot with a conservatory program but changed her mind after realizing how little all her advanced studies in high school mattered there and then seeing what Temple had to offer her both academically and artistically. It is by no means the perfect university…there are many things we wish were different there. You must be a go-getter and self-motivating to succeed at Temple. The opportunities are there but YOU must fight for them…not every MT or theatre student is guaranteed stage time…much like real life. As the program grows and matures, I expect to see more opportunities arise for these kids. After all, this is a new program. It will have it’s growing pains. The first class of MT kids will graduate this spring. I think my D’s class will be the first to have gone through all four years of the program. Hopefully there will be many Temple successes to talk about in the years to come!!

Anyone auditioning today?

I auditioned this afternoon. This audition was definitely the quickest… we started at 1 and I was 4th to sing so I was done by 2:30. I really liked the faculty I was able to meet, and the students were all very helpful, informative, and friendly. My parents were hesitant to let me audition for Temple since they didn’t like that it was in a bad part of town. After we toured the campus today, they changed their minds and now really like the school because it has an actual campus. I liked the school a lot, and from what I heard, we find out after their last audition, which is in 2 weeks.

I auditioned this morning! I was about midway through the list so I was out at about 12:30. My mom also wasn’t crazy about me auditioning for Temple, but after touring in December and a few reassuring words from stagemom (not to mention I completely LOVED it), my Mom’s okay with it.

I think I might still attend the school for theatre even if I don’t get into the MT concentration. The students were actually telling us that about half of the MT class that was accepted last year were actually students from Temple already. So if I wanted to, I could always reaudition for the program next year.

I honestly went into my audition not thinking much of the school, but after getting more insight on the program, I definitely am more interested in it. I have other safety schools, but none I really like, so I’m glad I have Temple as a safety that I can see myself going to. Like 62442 said, even if I don’t get accepted into MT, I can still major in theatre at a good school.

While I don’t have a kid in Theater at Temple, my wife, son, sister and I have all graduated from Temple undergrad or a grad program there. We also have a number of friends with kids who are presently at Temple or who have recently graduated. My daughter, who attends a nearby BFA program, has done summer shows with very talented and well trained students in Temple’s MT program. If you are looking for a strong BA Theater/MT program with a strong, broad liberal arts component, Temple is a very good choice. Its Theater department enjoys a very solid reputation and the liberal arts program has a lot of depth as well as breadth.

For those whose parents (or who themselves) are concerned about the “neighborhood”, Temple is as safe as any city college. The campus has expanded tremendously over the last 10 years, the surrounding neighborhood has undergone a lot of rehab and development with students, members of the Temple community and members of the community at large enjoying a revitalization of the area. We have a number of friends with both sons and daughters who live(d) in the dorms or off campus housing without any safety issues or problems. Of course, like in any city environment, you have to use common sense but if a student does so, there shouldn’t be a problem. An added bonus is that Temple’s location is 10-15 minutes north of center city Philadelphia and all that it has to offer to students - a dynamic theater and performing arts community, restaurants, shopping, cultural and historical attractions, a vibrant and diverse night life. Philadelphia is a great college town.

I couldn’t have said it any better MichaelNKat!

62442- I don’t know if what you’re saying about 1/2 of last year’s MT class being current Temple students is correct. I know there were 7 boys and 5 girls originally accepted (or something like that), all freshman except for one transfer from another school (she ended up not attending). I do know that there are alot of current freshman/sophmore theater/music students auditioning this year for MT admittance. I also know that there were quite a few freshman/sophmores/juniors who auditioned into the program when it became available a few years ago. I will have to ask D what the numbers are.

Temple’s theater program is solid. My D has actually been cast in many straight theatre projects/workshops and is really enjoying the actor training. As I’ve said before, Temple is only as good as you make it. I think that holds true with any school.

And she loves Philly! Except for the SEPTA. Anyone familiar with MTA in NY will absolutely HATE Philadelphia’s trains!!
Best of luck to all of you!

Random tidbit! If anyone was wondering, the song that was used in the dance audition this year (assuming that the morning 2/26 wasn’t the only one that used it) was “Boom Sh-Boom” by Martin Sexton. Yes, I just had to ask after the audition was over. xD

mommybug- Just saw that your son was accepted! Congratulations!!! D told me that there were 2 students accepted from the first 2 auditions…so happy that one of them was your son!! Today is the last audition so everyone should probably hear by this week. They are very good about letting you know quickly!!

Best of luck to everyone out there still waiting!

Thank you Stagemom,

My son and I are thrilled that he was accepted to Temple!! He has been accepted to another musical theatre program and a music program at other colleges, so right now he is weighing his options.

I told him if he decides on Temple he needs to make up his mind soon so he gets good housing!

Congrats mommybug! D accepted for MT as well! Perhaps they’ll be classmates:)

Thanks Persevere! Congrats to your daughter too. We sent in our deposit to Temple today in order to ensure housing. He is still a little torn between vocal performance at Otterbein and musical theatre at Temple but I think he is leaning towards Temple now! Both are good options so we are happy.

Has your daughter applied for housing yet?

Yay!! Temple’s doing some awesome shows next year!!! If you are close enough to the school, you may want to drop by and check out the MT concert…all the students in the concentration will be performing ('cept those who are abroad right now). March 27th and 28th @ 7 pm. Let me know if you would be interested and I’ll let you know the details. Also you can catch “A Flea in Her Ear” that same weekend. Go Templeton’s!!! :)

Also if you have any questions I’d be happy to put you in touch with my D. Or I’d be happy to answer any questions from a parents perspective as well!!

Is anyone here a Theatre major at Temple & not in the MT concentration? I’m curious about what classes non-MT students take

Has Temple announced the 2011/2012 season yet? Really interested to hear what they will be doing.
