Hi! Does anyone have any ideas on how Temple University is? All I know is that it is located in Philadelphia.... What is it's reputation like? How is student life there? Any info would be hopeful. Thanks in advance!

no one at all?

It has a decent reputation within the Philadelphia area.

I visited the campus & outskirts of it. It is pretty large. It's summer so no students around...especially on a saturday. Seems like a good enough location - on mass transit. I read the reputation is good. Open house in October. Visit the website.

Actually, there are a lot of students around during the Summer...

I think it's pretty reputable. The only thing I have heard is that it's not in a very good area of Philly. Is that true?

North Philly gets a very bad rap, because people think it's full of people walking around with guns. It's not the nicest place in the world, but you have very little to worry about.

Well that's good. Do you know how pre-med is there? Is the science department good?

Sorry if this is like a thread hijacking, it just got me thinking.

I know that pre-med is popular, and very competitive. A friend of mine got into one of the combined programs, and chose it over Texas and Notre Dame. I think science is pretty good, but I'm not a science person at all, so I have no idea.

temple is well-respected in the philly/south jersey area... and thats about it. Its pre med is pretty good.
North philly is not a real bad place... and the temple campus is pretty safe, with those blue police things every other corner basically.

Actually, it's well respected in the northeast, and has a very good international reputation.

Blue police things?

Any opinions on the political science/international relations majors?

I dont think we have IR haha

Temple calls it international studies.

Yeah, don't know anyone majoring in it. Can't help you with that sorry :)

Okay. Let's tackle this "commuter campus" thing. How is the social life at Temple due to the number of commuters. Additionally, how is the sports scene? I know it's D1 but how important are the athletics to students?

It's definitely not a commuter only school anymore. Plenty of people commute, plenty of people are from outside the region, and plenty of people like myself live close enough to come home whenever, but stay on campus a lot.

the sports scene is decent. Basketball is obviously the most popular, and a lot of students go for sure. Football is, again, obviously less popular, but it'll get more popular as our success increases in the near future.

Temple Men's Basketball just won the A-10 Championships. And the Women's program have gone to the tournament in the last liek 4-5 years i think.

There are two subway stations and a train station on campus. There's also a free shuttle bus that goes to center city, ambler campus, med school campus, and chinatown (there's a podtriatic school there) There's also regular buses that run through it.

Temple campus is very safe. Temple has one of the largest police force in PA. Outside the campus is kinda unsafe. But its stupid to go outside the campus, because theres like nothing off campus. If you want to go out, just go downtown, the subway is safe. Just be street smart, walking with someone at night is a good idea, or walking in places where other students are.

Temple's reputation has really been increasing a lot in the past like 5-10 years. Currently in a 80million$ renovation process. business school is nationally ranked. graduate school is good/cheap.

You may want to look at this board on CC and search the older threads for more information...

temple u is where people become monks :P
