My D emailed back saying she already has the program and uses it a lot.

My D blocks her own facebook on her Mac with a program called Self Control. She sets up a block for a pre-set time period. She loves it.

Hmmnn… I wonder if some of us might want to do the same for CC! ;)

I could totally use that for CC! But I like the self control program best. It is surely something you could set up limits together that might work better with some children. However, I will say that Time management is crucial in college and so the earlier they begin to police themselves the better. I know it’s not a debate, but sometimes ruling with an iron fist has kids just breaking the rules further than they would if they actually felt they had some input.

As for the friend changing the password… I know lots of kids who do that over finals, but mostly they have their parents change it so they don’t somehow land a password in unscrupulous hands.

Amy Chua has a entire chapter in her book about how to block access to Facebook with one swing of a sledge hammer. (I haven’t read the book, only the excerpts, so I don’t know how she actually accomplished it.)

I can’t block anything that my kids would not be able to unblock ![]()
I try not to worry about it as longs as grades/commitments are OK.
My S has an android, so occasionally, if I know he really does have a lot to do, I will ask him to leave the phone in the kitchen. This way he can still use it if needed but is not being distracted by constant texting…see, texting is a culprit here ;)

An easy way to block all internet distractions would be to turn off your router for a certain time – say from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Of course, that affects the whole household, and also prevents the kids from accessing sites they might need to complete homework – like the teacher’s web page where the assignment is posted!

We took the same approach as monydad. Didn’t block anything, and let (hoped?) the kids developed some self-control.

if he has Google Voice, he can do all the texting on the computer ;)

^^ he seems to do EVERYTHING through his phone…
