Temporary Housing in SF?

@gosmom: The employer is near 2nd and Market.
Thanks.

^Okay, so that’s really more Embarcadero/Financial District than downtown. Not that it makes a huge difference (though is definitely further from SOMA), but good to know.

The Castro would be a nice location, and easy access on the trains to 2nd/Market.

Today’s Top Listing from Craigslist, close to 2nd & Market.

But again, I’d advise expanding your geographic area. My son works on Market at Stockton within blocks of 2nd & Market and has no problem getting to work or weekend activities from Central Richmond by muni bus. As CaliforniaDancer points out, being right on a direct busline makes for an easy commute. Likely less expensive as well, although I’ve never asked what his rent is.

Bayside is walking distance from 2nd and Market…

I think my daughter works at 2nd and Market. :)

Edit: Ok…I am a block off. :)

Park Merced is too far.

Bayside will work well…

I work at 2nd and Brannon and for blocks around the area is full of twenty somethings. The Studios is fine, between 4th and 5th is fine although it’s a little more industrial looking. Above Whole Foods is fine, in fact, there is good security in that building and an ample parking lot with quite a few amenities around. You have to be aware that it’s not a purely residential area like the Richmond or Inner Sunset, but it is full of young professionals and very near lots of great stuff.

In addition to BART, there are also direct commuter buses from the East Bay which are designated by letters rather than numbers. You can find the routes on the AC Transit web site. Time wise, the commute from the East Bay can be shorter than from the Sunset or Outer Richmond, and the weather is much better; you won’t freeze from the fog.

Having lived in both the Sunset and the East Bay, my commute was always easier on the East Bay! I second Rockridge and Elmwood neighborhoods. I am glad that she has a bit of breathing room, and hope that she will find a great place soon. In SF in my 20s I lived in some real dives, but I just learned to walk quickly with an air of “don’t fu%& with me”. I don’t even want to peak at the crime statistics in my old lower Haight neighborhood.

^^Agree that the Sunset and Richmond can be cold and foggy and can be a long commute. However, having lived in the Elmwood district in Berkeley as a 20 something, I can tell you that the commute to BART and BART everyday to SF was a pain. Also, Elmwood was the only place that I was ever mugged in the SF Bay Area. Personally, I find many SF neighborhoods to be safer than Elmwood because there are so many people out and about even late at night. JMO

Agree with the recommendation about the Castro district in SF. Better weather than the Sunset or Richmond, and an easy, easy commute to 2nd and Market. Also is a great hub for transportation anywhere in SF. I also lived there as a young single woman and found it very safe. Lots of men around who were not interested in me LOL! Nowadays, it is still the gay capital, but I know many families and other young people who live there. Very pretty city residential neighborhood.

Good luck!

A quick update and thanks again to everyone who offered advice. My D got a sublet for August in Pacific Heights. She has been putting in applications for apartments that will be available on September 1, but may be able to stay on another month in the sublet if she doesn’t get anything. If anyone is reading this for advice, the on-line resources we found most useful were Trulia’s crime maps (which not only tell you the number of crimes, but what kinds of crimes, by neighborhood), Craigslist and Padmapper. At least for the moment, the crisis is over. Many thanks to the people who offered help by PM and all of those who gave advice here. I really appreciate it.

Pacific Heights is nice. :)

By the way, I wish we had looked at the crime maps before our kids applied to a couple of schools. Some of the campus’ are surrounded by sex crime offenders. Ackk!

@dstark – My daughter is leasing an apartment at Bayside Village in mid-Sept. I think the SOMA area is booming with startups these days, and she is very happy about living there. I’ll just be happy for her to have a place for more than a few nights or a month.

Thanks again everyone for the help.

Your daughter will like Bayside Village…not only did my daughter live there…but my partner sitting next to me lived there many years ago, and he liked it too.

Good luck to your daughter…

Yup, it’ll be fun. Lots of great stuff going on around there, makes me wish I was young and hip. Sigh. She’s done well for herself all the way around. Congrats on having such a smart daughter.
