I finally got my assignment a few days ago. I'm at Smith (which I have no problem with), and I have 5 roommates. I know this space is temporary, but I was wondering if anyone could fill me in on how long I might be waiting until I'm put in permanent space, and what will this temporary room be like? I'm assuming I should probably pack lightly until I have my permanent space?

You likely will have your own room by move-in day. They do this like a “holding” pattern when there is still movement near move in day. For the last two years, there have not been students actually placed in a room with 6 roommates. There have been temporary triples in a double for maybe a week or two. Hang in there. An assignment is good, and you will likely have only 1-2 roommates in another week. Not saying it couldn’t happen, but things change even in the last two weeks.

but wherever my permanent space is, it is definitely in the community-style dorms, right?

It would be whereever a room opened up.
