This is mainly directed to current CMU students, ie AA, ThinkDifferent, KrazyKow, Sabretoothtiger, etc.

I will be attending this fall as a freshman in MCS. Although I doubt we would need to select classes any time prior to orientation, I have looked at online course schedules and suggested course sequences in order to plan out my fall semester schedule. My planned schedule can be found here:

I realize that the schedule contains alot of CS classes (considering I'm not even in SCS), and this is intended on my part because I want to internally transfer to SCS after spring semester, and if not even that, then I'll double major with CS and Math (I know, easier said than done).

Note:
This is assuming necessary success is achieved in the math placement exam and ap exams this year, namely ap us gov't, so that I can use it as an all purpose HSS credit to fulfill a semester of fine arts/humanities requirements.
I plan to take Interpretation and Argument either in spring semester or the following summer session one.
I have taken Concepts of Math, which is a prerequisite for a few classes, while in precollege last year.

I would like to read any of your comments/concerns/suggetions you may offer. First of all, do you think that this schedule is even possible due to some requirements I do not know of? Also, will it be probable that I will even be able to take the desired CS classes, in spite of the fact I'm in MCS and will not get priority? I have the general impression that this is quite a hard schedule, would you care to comment on the difficulty of this schedule (ie is it extremely difficult or manageably difficult)?

Please try to reply, I appreciate your help on this matter.

im not sure if your aware of this (you probably are) but everyone in mcs must take 2 semesters of calc, 2 of physics, 1 of chem, 1 of bio, and one of comp science before junior year

also you must take the calc your freshman year

im not a current student but im attending mcs too (probably)

morgan17, I'm aware of it.
Analysis/ap credit will cover calc, Matter and interactions is physics, and I've got the programming done. I guess I'll eventually take chem and bio by junior year or maybe not at all if I transfer to scs.

I gotta say, that is a very demanding schedule. M&I, Analysis and 15-251 are challenging and time-consuming classes. 15-211 is also not a joke. You might want to be careful with 211 because sometimes (e.g. this semester) there are two different lectures, one for CS majors and one for non-majors, and TCPulse doesn't show that info.

I think you have to have credit for a programming class (i.e. 15-1xx or 15-200) to get into 211. A 5 on one of the AP CS exams gives you such credit, but since I have little idea of how APs work, I'm not sure. My personal situation was that I enrolled in SCS, and I knew enough programming to pass the stupid little programming test they send out over the summer, and enough discrete math to pass the discrete math test. However, I had never taken a CS class in high school, so I placed out of 21-127 and into 15-200. I was an oddball; most people who place out of 21-127 get to go straight on to 15-211.

Also, having an 8:30 class every day sucks. A lot.

It's traditional for CS majors to take 15-251 in the spring of their freshman year. The enrollment in fall will be comparatively much smaller, so you won't have many people to help you out if you need it (helping fellow students out is a traditional part of 251). So if you were to make a change, I'd say that should be it.

Is this the complete list of when classes will be offered in the fall? I'm having some big scheduling issues...I can't take the classes I wanted to and fit them in right, there's always at least 1 overlapping class. Are there any times classes will be offered that might not be listed yet?

chocolateluvr, what classes are you trying for? Most people don't have any problems.

tamirims-I really wouldn't recommend your schedule. First, you'd REALLY have to work hard to do it (55 credits in CS is a lot), and it might be better for you to get a decent GPA before you attempt to transfer. Also, and don't take this personally, but if you weren't accepted into CS in the first place, you'll be in classes with people whose background is much stonger than yours in the areas they were looking for. It might be a better idea to catch up (take your math and sciences and do well) and then attempt the transfer. Of course, talk to your advisor when they're assigned this summer. If its like last year, MCS registers in early August (SCS is the only school that registers at orientation if I remember correctly).

edit: sorry, I forgot to mention that 251 and 211 should probably be spread out in two semesters if you can swing it.

Thanks for the advice!
I think I'll drop 15-251 and take it spring semester. So that way I could focus on only three really tough classes(in order of percieved difficulty), Analysis, 15-211, and M&I.

What's on the discrete math test? I don't think I know discrete math, and i would need to place out of concepts of math to take 15-211, because i will place out of all the lower cs courses?

If I have to take concepts of math(21-127), the only cs class i can take (that i don't know the material already) is System Skills in C (15-113), which is only 6 credits. I'm gonna be a CS major, by the way, so just 6 credits of cs first semester doesn't sound fun.

Can I take 21-127 and 15-211 side-by-side, or just try to learn the discrete math stuff and place out of 21-127, or do I just have to focus on my minor/elective stuff?
