Son is a freshman in Pratt and is tenting. (!) Aside from the obvious--he's sleeping in a tent to get basketball tickets--will some of you kindly tell me about all this?
Thanks!!

Amazing! Thanks.

Anyone know when "Grace" is called? It's going down to 22 degrees there tonight!

mafool~I just sent you a pm. Welcome to the "moms of tenting Dukies"!

I believe Grace was called last night.

Grace was called last night. For all you parents, this is my third year tenting, and I assure you that as long as your son or daughter wears some warm clothes to bed and in general takes common sense precautions they should be all right. I've never gotten sick out in Kville (actually find the tent rather comfortable). As for academics, it's very soothing out in Kville during the day, and I find it much more comfortable studying out there than in my dorm or a library. Studying at night is a bit tougher due to noise and not the greatest lighting, however. In general, this is a really really short tenting season, and (sadly) it will be over before you know it.

What is grace? I skimmed thru the linked page above but it doesn't really explain that.

Grace is when we don't have to have anyone in our tent at all. We usually get it at night if the temperature is below 30 degrees (officially we have to get it if it's below 20). We also get it for an hour after each tent check.

Thanks.

I still don't understand why people tent at all aside from that it's a K-ville tradition. Is there a line formed by the tenters to get the game tickets? If so why not just get on line during game day.

The tents are I guess theoretically the line. Each consist of up to 12 people. The first tent is the first group of people to be let into the UNC game and so on. We have line monitors who are students who keep track of the people in the tents and make sure that we have the appropriate number of people in Kville at all times. I know some of you parents might be rolling your eyes, but trust me it's more than worth. Kville is also a fun social scene on campus, especially the nights before the game. Also, kind of a misconception, we don't get tickets...we just get let in in order to the general admission section: "Cameron Crazies" section.

Yeah I keep getting requests like "DUDE, you HAVE to get me tickets with your student ID when you go to Duke!"

Tenting is something I really look forward to. I'll be the one with blue paint all over.

I'm pumped... a spot opened up in a tent, so now I'm blue tenting!

Go to hell carolina, go to hell!

my sister lives in a dorm right outside kville and she says that at night it can sometimes get really loud...so i can imagine studying at night IN kville would be pretty difficult.

Is "grace" posted in a spot that I, interested parent who doesn't want to be overbearing, can see it?

jg6273- Son's tent is "on the edge" of the group; he says it's not terribly noisy, though, because of its location, there is a bright light shining through the tent skin all night long.

I think an enterprising sociology or anthropology student could write a good thesis on this "community."

grace is when the weather is too cold and they let all of the tenting students sleep in their own rooms.

They really haven't kept the K-ville website up to date. That would be the best and most practical place to post grace. Unfortunately it's not posted (anywhere that I know of). As for light, I always found that a tarp over the tent blocks a good amount of it, even if you are directly next to a lamppost.

Good idea, duke25. I sure hope that the Pratt students would have thought of that!!!!!

Actually... one already has :)

It's a pretty good book--S1 gave it to me last Christmas, knowing that I would enjoy knowing how it would be for him to be a part of the tenting in K'ville.

He's back in a tent this year, and again loving the experience! And last night's game was another heart-stopper--we love seeing him among the Crazies!
