Term Limits at Dartmouth... in Regard to Financial Aid?

I haven't received transfer credit yet, but it would seem pretty imminent that I will be considered a junior when I arrive. That said, I would probably need a third year to graduate with the degree(s) that I want.

I know that Thayer requires a 5th year of its BE candidates, but I thought it pertinent to inquire about whether term limits exist for Dartmouth students, especially as they relate to financial aid support?

That is a good question and you should really speak directly with the financial aid office, but, from the Financial Aid Handbook for 2008 (due to updated),

“How many years can I receive financial aid?
Since the 35 credits for a Dartmouth degree can be completed in 12 terms or fewer, Dartmouth scholarship assistance is normally limited to 12 terms. Thirteenth terms must be financed with family resources, loan assistance, and “portable” outside scholarships such as Federal Pell Grants, state grants, and merit scholarships. Requests for an exception to this policy must be submitted to the Financial Aid Committee. Those entering with advanced class standing or as transfer students are eligible for fewer terms of grant eligibility since they are closer to graduation upon matriculation.”

“Fewer terms…”

Yeah, that’s the vagueness I was inquiring about. And completing a double major in 12 terms - in general - may be… tough, no?

It is my understanding that 5th-year B.E. students are eligible for financial aid through the Thayer School.

yes, Thayer students can have 5th year of finaid.

Remember the time you have spent at your previous school will be counted in calculating your 12 terms . If you are coming in as a junior they will probably only give you FA for the remaining 6 terms to finish a BA and an additional 3 terms if you are also getting a degree in engineering.
