Right now I am in a Terminal MA English program with full funding. I could apply to the Ph.D. program at my school without finishing the MA or perhaps even move into the BA-Ph.D track at my school, but I am enjoying the masters because I feel it is giving me some important background. Also, I would like to have more options for Ph.D. programs. I realize that some programs would require you to redo the MA as part of the Ph.D., but I have also noticed that some good programs don't, especially in Rhet/Comp, my field. I also realize that this way might take me a bit longer, but that's fine. Based on my research, it looks like it will take one extra year. Are there any other drawbacks that I have not considered? Does anyone think that finishing my MA will make it harder to get into Ph.D. programs, or am I wrong about how much longer it should take?
