Sooo, I've been doing practice tests in prep for the PSAT tomorrow, and I'm horrible at the math section. I do great on the other sections, but for God's sake, I don't know how I can get a decent score on math. In math classes, I do surprisingly well (except I'm struggling in precalc right now hehe), but I simply don't know how to improve my math scores.

On the practice ACT and practice PSAT I took last year, I scored extremely well on all the subjects, but I always have a score below average for math.

At this rate, is it best that I should get a tutor, just for math? How should I improve? I'm only a junior, so I still have next summer to study.

Thank you in advance!

Well, there are a few good things here. First, if you weren’t aiming for any awards, the PSAT is good training ground. No one will know your scores. The second good thing is that math scores are generally the easiest to increase. You should take a practice SAT and see what you score on the math section. Then, work your way through an SAT prep book and re-test (again with a practice SAT) and see if you improve. The only way to get better math scores is through practice. If you don’t do better in math after working through an SAT book, I would consider a math tutor, but definitely just try the books first.

The last good thing is that it sounds like you’re set for the CR/Writing sections. This is good because those are the hardest sections to improve in. Writing requires a lot more studying than Math and CR is nigh on impossible to increase if you don’t have a good foundation in reading… so the positives from all this are that if you study the Math section this year and maybe consider a tutor this summer, your scores will increase.
