Finally got my PSAT scores back. :(

I only got a 207, which is weird since constantly got higher than 220 from practice tests. Do you think I still can get the commended PSAT score if I live in CA? My chances for NQMST are totally gone. :(

Also, if I did terrible on the PSAT and didnt qualify for the NQMST, does that hurt my chances at Stanford?

Just realized my serious grammar mistakes. Sorry. Let me retype that.

Colleges don’t see PSAT scores.

You will make Commended…that score is the same nationwide…it’s usually 200-203

Commended score was 203 for 2014 and it is unlikely to go up for 2015. So you should make the cut.

What matters to schools is the SAT I/II and ACT scores. Making NMSF is an honor and Stanford does not give any money for making it. Suffice it to say NMSFs also get rejected in large numbers from Stanford and so that will not be a deciding factor in your admission.

Don’t sweat it. I got a 170-something on mine and decided the SAT wasn’t for me so I took the ACT and got a 30. Whatever you’re most comfortable with.

First off. Anything above 150 cannot be considered terrible for PSAT. We tend to have stilted views around here since many students and parents are on the extremely high end. You did very well and should be proud of yourself.

As mom2collegekids pointed out, you should be commended, but are unlikely to make NMSF.

While that may close a few doors, there are MANY opportunities to do well. The PSAT is a pre-req for NMF, but you can still completely nail your SAT and get into whatever school you can.

Understand that schools like Stanford are hard to get in regardless of how well you do. There are simply too many very highly qualified candidates. You PSAT score would not really be a factor at all.

150 is around the national average. It is not terrible, but it is not worth mentioning.

That was my point. The kid got a 207 and thinks its terrible. Even a 150 is not terrible, it is average.
