I've heard many similar things about terry and lander, such as noisy, social, bad food(?), same location...etc

So which one would you suggest for an incoming freshman? I'm international, aim to study business and I don't like too much noise but want to be social at the same time. one thing i can't stand is dirty bathroom :'( which DORM has the cleanest bathroom where you share with less people?

Also, Terry's theme is pre-health and science...would that affect me a lot if i don't plan to study in this field? would i feel left out?

Please give me as much info as possible, thanks!!:D

I just visited Lander today and I didn’t think it was too bad! I thought the cafeteria on the main floor was great too! I don’t know why everyone says it sucks.

The bathrooms were OKAY, not ideal, but they weren’t dirty. I think I counted like 3 stalls for showers on one side and I don’t recall the other side, and I asked a girl and she said throughout the whole year she only had to wait for a shower once.

Everyone told me that being a freshman, Lander is the greatest experience because that’s where ALL the freshmen go and that’s where you meet all your friends. You just have to make sure to sign up early or else you’ll get stuck in triple rooms.

I’m gonna tell you my first hand experience from when I was in terry/lander during my freshman year. I’m returning to UW with 1.5 more years to go after a few years of misdirection =/ and let me tell you guys, I’ve been coast to coast and nothing has compared to UW so far… which is why I’m returning =D. Anyway, I’m sure some things change year to year but:

Noisy/Social Atmosphere - Lander was definitely louder than terry. Whenever I went over to terry, there was absolutely nothing going on even on weekends. That might have something to do with the fact that the students housed in terry are the pre-med type students… I dunno. Also, lander seemed to get quieter as the floors went up. For example, lander 3rd floor was always crazy! Everyone’s doors open, people out in the hallway throwing a football around, and just generally a non-stop social scene even into late hours of the night. That also kinda means you have to be extra careful of what you keep in your rooms b/c you never know who your roommate might let in or they may accidently leave the door unlocked. My friend, who relied on every penny she had to make it through school, got cash stolen that was supposed to cover her some of her expenses that semester. I was on the 5th floor and it was about half as loud as the third floor and everything above us was pretty quiet. One weekend, we actually received complaints about being “too loud” from floors above us! On a WEEKEND lol!

Terry cafe - food doesn’t taste bad but it is bad for you haha. You will get tired of it and you will pack on your freshman 15! It’s a lot of pastas, pizza, burgers, you get the point. Luckily, terry/lander is a short walk to the ave for a much greater variety of foods (at pretty decent prices). That’s a plus b/c the other dormers have to walk further for outside food!

Bathrooms - Both lander/terry the bathrooms are definitely not private, not ideal, but decent - Usually there are four showers at one end, a bunch of sinks in the middle, and i think 2/3 toilets on the other end. I’ve never waited for the showers, BUT I remember our circuits always being shorted out when more than 1 person was blow-drying their hair haha! They usually fixed it pretty fast but it was annoying! You need a key for the girl’s bathroom but don’t think that will stop some of those guys. I’ve never used showers in terry but their bathrooms are clean. Lander - just as the social scene was louder at the bottom than on the top, the bathrooms are dirtier on the lower floors as well - go figure right! I think the third floor had someone painting their walls with poop! Sad but an example of some of the horror experiences you might encounter.

I sorta lucked out cause I got paired with one of my bf’s from highschool, but we ended up in the triples. The space was tight and our third roommate was GROSS! I mean, she left cruddy underwear on the floor, didn’t shower after working out and the room stank kind of gross!!! Gagging as I type this… ugh! Luckily, she left after about two months hahaha. So we turned our triple into a double with some tools and handywork and managed to use the room as a double for the rest of the year =). Just a little tip if anyone here manages to lose their third roommate… not that I’m endorsing it ;).

Hope that gives a little insight. From your post, I’m guessing you will choose Terry but glad to answer anything else if you want =).
