Terry Scholarship Nomination for 2016

I received an email from Tech about being nominated to compete for the Terry Scholars Program. I haven’t submitted the general scholarship application for Tech yet, so I am curious what considerations are made when they nominate you to apply. I don’t have a ton of elected positions (2) but I do have a lot of community service hours, 500 plus.

Does anyone have any experience with the process at Tech for a freshman? How many are nominated to complete the application? It looks like 600 are selected to apply and 60-90 are sent over to the Terry Foundation and then they select the students to interview. Not sure if those numbers are still accurate.

Texas Tech is the only Texas school I applied to and at this point, I am not considering applying to any other Texas schools. I was pretty set in my decision to go to an OOS school until the notification arrived in my email. The two schools cost basically the same amount since I qualify for the OOS tuition waiver. If I received the Terry Scholarship, I would definitely go to Tech, no question. The opportunity would be amazing and would keep me in Texas.

Thanks for any insight!

I was nominated but didn’t make the cut. It is largely based on income. It is a VERY good scholarship in that it will pay for everything. I would strongly recommend you apply. Good luck.

Nominations are largely based on income, from my understand. But actually receiving the scholarship is much much more than income (in fact given some circumstances your families income may be over the max). If you have any questions feel free to ask me
