Test-obsessed friends?

Hey guys,

So my high school is pretty competitive, and some of my friends and I (juniors) recently took the SAT.

We got 2380, two 2350s, and 2340. The 2350s are going to retake because they both got 770 math which they said was "embarrassing". I (the 2340) think this is kind of crazy, and feel a bit pressured to re-take too but also feel that I should focus more time on other, more productive things like the community service/ECs I'm doing.

Also, I'm white and the others are asian, and the two said that it would be easier for me because it's "easier for white people" but that it is more important for them or something. Does that argument make any sense?

The last consideration is that it's easy to retake, you just go do it, so there doesn't seem to be a downside since you can just send the scores you want anyway. I still think it's a waste of time/money though, idk.

Thanks.

not all colleges do score choice

Don’t retake. physicsboy is right. A lot of good colleges (many ivy league) don’t do score choice. There’s realistically no difference between a 2200 and a 2400. It’s almost the same to colleges.

What a load of crap. Functionally, the difference between a 2340 and a 2380 is minimal, at most. Like you said, instead of studying for the SAT, you should do something productive: Play a good prank on your school, get an A+ instead of an A, take a really pretty girl to a dance, something! If your score came in below a 2300 or so, I might consider retaking. Above that, you’re wasting time, energy, and money, and stressing unnecessarily.

Additionally, that whole “It’s easier for white people” sounded really racially self-aggrandizing to me. It’s more important for them? Eff that.

I agree with what’s been said. 2340 is so close to a 2400 it doesn’t make that much of a difference. 2400’s get rejected from top schools all the time. When you have decent SATs its time to focus on other aspects of the admission process: ECs, recs, essays, gpa…

As far as “easier for white people” that depends on the school. Many schools pride themselves on diversity which means your competition is more with people of the same race. If more “qualified” asians apply then it will be more difficult for asians to get in. The same can be said for any race. Some people call the impact race has “affirmative action” (or “reverse discrimination”) and its questionable about whether or not its constitutional. I think I heard that technically colleges aren’t supposed to do it, but it still happens.

The asians say that because a study found that it takes an asian 140points more on the SAT to get accepted to the same colleges as their white counterparts. And stereo typically, colleges expect asians to do amazing on standardized tests so I see where they are coming from, but it might not be worth it IMO.

My take on the “easier for white people” comment is: He/She was talking about parental pressure…

I also agree with everyone who said don’t retake… 2340 is an amazing score, congratulations!
