Test out of Music Humanities

What is the test about? History or music and composers? Or playing music? I've played the trumpet all through high school for both marching band and jazz band. I don't know much about theory though.

It’s pretty theory intensive from what I heard at summer advising.

Yeah, I’ve heard that it’s history/theory focused and very intense; evidently very few people test out each year. I’m in the same boat; I’ve played alto sax in jazz ensemble, pit orchestra, marching band ect. and have played piano for 12 years, but I doubt I could test out of the requirement.

So the test is intense, but isn’t the class relatively easy?

I think the idea of making the class easy and the test hard is so that it is accessible for non-music people, but so that only music prodigies can get out of taking it.

I don’t get it, why are there a lot of theory questions on the test? I thought Music Hum is mainly a music history and appreciation class.

There is little to no reason to test out of it. The class itself is easy and you tend to meet interesting people in your Art/Music Hum classes.

Just my .02$

^if one tests out of it, can one still take the class?

In that case why take the test…

yeah it’s mostly music history and appreciation. recognize and talk intelligently about the various periods, understand how they fit together, know the big names and what they did, etc.

I came in on the back of 13 years of classical piano training, and was told “don’t take the test, it doesn’t matter, you won’t place out of it”. okay, so I take the class - and frankly it was quite enjoyable. I learned plenty of things I didn’t know already, didn’t have to do too much busywork, it was worthwhile taking it even though I had a lot of education in classical music to begin with. they skip all of the sections in the book on, say, far east musical traditions or african musical traditions, and just focus on the western traditions. dead white men all the way. can’t go wrong.

The point is they don’t want anyone testing out of the class. Frankly I wasn’t even aware that one could test out of music hum, I figured it was like lit hum and cc and you were going to take it come hell or high water.

Its a fun class, not at all intense, and you will probably learn something (even if you are coming in with an extensive musical education).

Hey, now that this year’s test results are out, anyone care to share theirs?

Will it be extremely tough if you don’t have any background in Western music?

^yeah, and just a “background” won’t cut it.

I didn’t mean the test. I meant the class itself. Will it be tough to do well in the class if I haven’t had any training in Western music?

a guy on my floor tested out. He is amazing at the guitar.

No they don’t assume any musical background.
