Test Scores-Important!

I really want to apply to William and Mary but I am having trouble with standardized testing. I take three AP's this year, two foreign languages, and two english courses. I've been interested in William and Mary since my sophomore year of high school but I feel with my recent ACT scores, I will have no chance. My counselor at school tells me that my grades are "good enough" for William and Mary; however, my test scores aren't their middle 50 percent. I know this is a frequently asked question, but, if applying out of state, if my test scores aren't out of the ball park, are my chances of getting in completely over?

oh and i am a senior!

certainly a common concern. I just responded to another post which asked essentially the same question.

Middle 50% ranges are just that, a range and they’re only the middle 50%. 25% of the students admitted score below the lowest part of that range and 25% of those admitted score higher. With W&M, no one is automatically in or out based upon any one component of the application.

We do encourage students to try the test a few times or try both the ACT and SAT (which there is still time to do for seniors who plan on applying regular decision) as we do superscore the SAT and we only look at whichever composite score is the highest if both tests are present.

If your scores are below our middle 50% range you may be less competitive than many other applicants as far as standardized testing is concerned but you may be more competitive elsewhere (grades, essay, etc). You’ll never know if you get in unless you apply. Just go in with the appropriate expectation (that W&M is selective and only 32% of those who apply are admitted).

Sorry for making you answer the same question twice!

But, thanks so much for answering. the answer you provided definitely makes me feel more comfortable in applying to W&M. Thanks!!

No problem. Happy to help. Will answer as many questions as people post.

Any college board programs recognized for merit awards?

Unfortunately not. W&M has three merit-scholarships unique to W&M and those are the only merit scholarships awarded through the application process. You can learn more about each of the three opportunities at [William & Mary - Financial Aid & Scholarships](http://www.wm.edu/admission/undergraduateadmission/applicationprocess/aidscholarships/index.php)
