Basically my test scores are as follows: 790 Physics, 800 Math, 2210 SAT (idk yet but thats what I am thinking), 34 ACT 11 Writting and probably 780-800 Bio (will take in June).

My question to you all is, should i keep taking the tests? Haha its getting boring (not that it wasn't boring to begin with), and I'm not sure how well this stacks up to NU standards. I want as big of an advantage test wise to possibly offset any other faulty aspects of the application. is a 2200+ high for NU? or would a 2250+ be much more significant? Planing to take the SAT again in March, and the ACT 2 more times :( (1 more in Febuary and a mandatory one in April).

Your SAT subjects are more than fine. Your SAT is certainly in the range - what’s the raw score out of 1400?

Your ACT score is above the middle 50%. So, you’re in the top 25%, and it would be a waste of time and money to retake it TWICE if NU is where you want to go. I’m uncertain why you’d retake it at all?

Honestly, I got into NU with a 32 ACT and no SAT score. What’s your GPA/do you have good EC’s? I think your ACT looks just fine.

Your call…but my head hurts looking at all the additional testing you think you need. Seriously consider what Perididdle has posted, and maybe rethink this game plan to take additional tests.

Northwestern superscores the SAT so they take the highest section scores accross all test dates (math, reading, writing). Not all schools superscore. Some take the best single sitting and some look at them all and average them out.

I’m not sure if they do the same for the ACT.

DS took the SAT 3 times over the course of a year and his score went up by 100 points each time.
He took the ACT twice and although his section scores varied, his composite was exactly the same.

The ACT has a mandatory test date at our school in April. We get 2 days off from school to take the ACT one day then the Prairie State test the next day (which i have no idea what it is…).

Haha I guess I should have asked this earlier, cause then I wouldn’t have signed up for the Febuary day.

One more question. Is a 2200+ on the SAT enough? or is 2250+ the consensus for not taking it again? Yes I am aware of super score but since i have only taken it once with pending results… that doesn’t apply yet.

BTW. NU is my first choice (ED) but Wash U does superscore ACT so I originally thought it would be worthwile to take it again since I am only 1 pt. from a 35 superscored. Just my thinking.

Your test scores are good - unless you can reasonably expect to go up to a 2350 or above (which would be stellar) you shouldn’t take it again. But you can determine if you should take the tests again or not better than any of us can. I would advise you to keep the score you have, however.

I wish it were that simple!
DS has 1580/1600, but his GPA is 3.7 UW/3.9 W, so I call NU a reach. His interview went very well though. (I know, means nothing!)

Your subject test scores are very strong as given, but is the math one Math I or Math II? That makes a difference. I’m guessing you’re a junior and haven’t taken/gotten back your SAT I scores because you said “idk yet but thats what I am thinking.” If you can get a 2200+, then I’d say just stick with that and not retake. Besides, the money you’d otherwise use on testing fees can go to charity, Haiti, even.

But just keep in mind that your test scores aren’t everything. There are students who get 2400s and get rejected. Colleges look at an applicant holistically and want to see a passion for learning and for whatever else (music, a sport, theatre, art, or whatever it is that you are truly passionate about). Of course having very strong test scores is always a plus to an application because you want to stack all the cards you can, so I understand where you are coming from (I was like that). Just don’t focus far too much on testing to the point of neglecting other parts of your app.

Applying ED like you stated is a good idea. My friend got in ED to NU’s Medill and she’s ecstatic-- I don’t know which NU school are you aiming for, but I hope that you’ll be accepted come December!

AVHS Dad - 1580/1600 with a 3.7 UW GPA? I don’t have tons of experience (ED to NU with a 3.9 UW GPA and a 32 ACT), but I don’t think that’s a reach! It might not be a 100% shoe in, but if he’s got EC’s to back it up, he’s a very strong candidate. 3.7 GPA is not bad.

Just got my SAT scores back!
680 CR (blah)
800 M
780 W

Im going to retake to get that CR up (dang vocab). NU superscores the one out of 1600 as well right? Because if that is the case, I only need to improve in one way =D.
Thanks everyone for the input!

Perididdle: Thanks for the vote of confidence. Ever since DS’s ED rejection from Rice, we’re not very confident in the higher end schools like NU. Still, he’s continuing to work hard and just had his best HS semester ever. No senioritis here!
Goood luck to all!

Are you guys sure that NU completely disregards Writing scores? I have not seen that anywhere on the website, and they continue to report all three sections.

Are you sure they only look at SAT out of 1600?

pretty sure they look at it out of 2400. After all, isn’t this a big journalism school? Meaning the writting section may have its merits in admissions?

You apply for your particular college, so I imagine that what Medill (Journalism) cares about won’t affect McCormick (Engineering) and Weinberg (Arts & Sciences) applicants. That said, I’ve never met anyone that thinks the SAT is actually a good measure of how well you write; good writing is not done in 20 minutes.
