what about the 2 Western/cowboy reading passages... what did u guys put for those questions?

stab in the dark... i put the vast task confronting the researchers..
how come that's hoplesse situation? becuz it doesn't mention anywhere how the situation was like. Instead, right after the "stab in the dark", it explains the difficulty followed by the endless number of stars.

wat task though....it says endless, they specifically said it was not posible to w.e they needed to do cus it was infinite, therefore, its hopeless; if it was a vast task, then it would be finite, but the passage clearly stated it was infinite

There was a writing, identifying errors question about tree logging, I think one of the choices was depleted quickly, don't remember what I put

the other reason i think the answer is not hopeless is that they explained an alternative that can be used to solve this problem. It was something like if they only examine the signals around sun-like stars where the inteligent forms are existable, the chances would increase significantly. i dun no man, i was debating over hopeless and that too.

But the thing is, the sentence said "the SETI projects were stabs in the dark." It didn't say anything about researchers and a vast task confronting them...I think the thing that can be directly taken from that is that the SETI projects were hopeless.

No it wasn't hopeless. Stabs in the dark doesn't mean that you give up--it just means that its really hard to find something--I put the big task or whatever.

i agree with scee3...see...i deliberated between the vast task and the hopelessness.....both were appealing, but i carefully scrutinized that area of the passage and i just felt hopeless was wat they were saying

Another thing for that question, would ETS really give you a correct answer like:

--The search for extra terrestrials is hopeless

or

--The scientists have a vast task ahead of them

Or maybe its just my dumb PR course talking, lol

for the western passage, what was the answer to the question asking for the relationship between the passages?

Hey I have a question about that math one that was like you had to find the digits b/w 999 and 10000 that had a pattern with each one, like 1234 [it has 1 digit b/w then or like 2468[2]]. I think I got six for that one...did anyone get that?

i took PR....hopeless would be a PR no no, lol, BUT...i just couldnt....

hopelessness is too strong

vast task...just seemed not wat they were saying....endless...u know

Ok when you are stabbing in the dark, its all about luck. Forget about how you are the world greatest swordsman or anything because it all won't better. also great challenge? how is it a challenge. would you say winning the lottery is a challenge? ahtour was talking bout how small the chance is and only if we are VERY VERY lucky can we gain signals from the aliens

No it would definitely not be hopeless. And answers such as these are usually incorrect anyways, because they are too absolute. Saying the task was vast is a lot more neutral and relates more to the passage...

Plus, sayint the project was hopeless did not correlate with the tone of the passage. Yes, the passage was neutral, but the SETI projects realized THEMSELVES that they were stabs in the dark. But it was worth it for them to put the effort into finding these signals.

Also, I also put (a) for the one about "genre." What had happened was that Francis PWNED the other people, and the glory he felt from this was tantamount to a drama play. (A) said something to the effect that the author humorously emphasized the feeling Francis got from this incident.

I remember dimunitve/virulent for the octupus one, it's definitely that one.

Doesn't matter. That exact passage says that the seti PROJECTS were STABS IN THE DARK. Projects--stabs in the dark = projects--hopeless.

i agree with everything tm2000 said

tm i think both of your questions are right and after explaining i am leaning towards great challenge too

i mean they did say how even if there were 1000 signals it would stillt ake so and so long to detect one of them. so in order to gain the chance scientists did this and this....

so i think they are still trying to conquer the task?

but both are right in their own ways. this really is a bad question

then why would the the SETI people be spending millions of dollars on these projects???

As soon as you say hopeless, you make the passage slanted. ANd there was in fact a question later on that asked the tone of the author, and one of the choices was something to the effect of "one-sided." That was definitely not correct. And YOU cannot jump to conclusions... you cannot say stabs in the dark=hopeless. You must base your knowledge off what the author says and connotates in the passage. He definitely did not call SETI hopeless.
