Testing Out of Calc 2?

Hey guys, I am a prospective engineer admitted for class of 2016. I'm taking the Calc BC exam in May, and I was just wondering if it is worth it to take the credit and start in Calc 3 if I get a 5. I have heard that both calc 1 & 2 are weeder courses at Michigan so I figured it would be a good idea to skip the classes, but if anyone has advice or experience on the matter it would be greatly appreciated!

Go Blue!

I would start in Calc 3 if you get a 5 on the BC test. Calc 1 & 2 are weeder courses. I’ve heard Calc 3 is less so. You will also benefit from 8 credits toward your degree and be able to use the time for something else.

Okay awesome thank you! What about a 5 in physics C mechanics if im self studying? Should I take the credit?

For lsa can you place out if you get a 5? it makes it unclear on the website [AP Guidelines | University of Michigan Office of Admissions](AP, IB Credit | University of Michigan Office of Undergraduate Admissions)

Well ill b an engineer…but yes you can take credit with a 5, I just don’t know if I should

I highly recommend you not take any class you test out of.

Why? Would my grades suffer?

Not necessarily, but it’ll be a lot of work competing against others in an environment with harsh curves. If you have a pretty solid understanding of the material, you can save yourself a bunch of time and effort and move on to the next level.

For LSA, if you get a 4 or 5 on the Math BC then you get 4 credits plus an additional 4 credits on completion of Math 215 with a C or better. You lose 2 of the 4 credits if you start at Math 116 and you lose all of the credits if you start from the beginning.

For COE, it looks like you get 4 credits for a 4 of Math BC and 8 credits for an 8 on Math BC. I think Calc 3 is required so they have a different standard from LSA.

so if you do not take calc 3 you do not get any credits?

How are the curves in calc 3 and beyond? Are they easier than calc 1 & 2?

In LSA, if you get a 4 or 5 on the Math BC exam:

You will get no AP credits if you start in Calc I.

You will get four AP credits if you take Calc II and get a C or better.

You will get eight AP credits if you take Calc III and get a C or better.

You will get four AP credits if you take no math at U-M.

The answer is yes, but it doesn’t matter, since you have to take Calc III and IV either way.
