Is it possible to test out of classes at UMass? If so, does that give you credit or does it just exempt you from taking the course if it is required for your major?

Thanks!

Other than getting course credit for AP tests, I’ve never heard of being able to “test out” of classes at UMass.

Is this something that might be possible at different colleges? Or is it overall pretty unheard of?

There’s hopefully a lot more to be learned from taking a class than just what can be tested on one test. So I’d be surprised if there are any schools that let you do this.

I don’t have broad knowledge of a lot of schools though, so maybe there are some that do.

To my knowledge, the only things you can test out of are the freshman writing class (through AP scores, SAT scores, or the writing placement test at orientation) and maybe the foreign language classes.

I’m pretty sure you just get a waiver for the writing classes but I think you can get credit for foreign language.

There is probably a Math placement test. Not sure if that is really “testing” out of classes, but it’s something.

At orientation, you get a math and writing test. The math test is some geometry and algebra that you should know from high school. The essay is just an easy 5 paragraph essay prompt. For both tests, the middle 1/3rd of scores on the math/writing tests have to take the regular math/freshman writing requirements respectively. The lowest 1/3rd of scorers have to take an extra remedial class in that subject, and the highest 1/3 is exempt from the requirement. You don’t get credit just exemption from the GenEd requirement. Is this what you meant?

Can an AP Calc score be used to satisfy the GenEd math requirement instead?
