Testing out of Math requirement through CLEP Exam?

I just now found out about CLEP. I am a Freshman at a community college planning to transfer to Michigan State in the Fall of 2017. Math is probably my worst subject, but it’s required in order to transfer. If I was to take the CLEP, which MSU accepts, would it suffice as my math requirement? Also, if anybody has any personal experience with the CLEP I would really appreciate it. I’m currently taking 4 classes (15 credits) My parents are worried that I won’t have enough time to study for the Exam along with my other classes. Is the test difficult? How much time should I spend on average studying for it? Finally, I understand that you only need ‘50’ in order to get credit. Is that 50 questions correct, or 50%?

You need to call MSU to ask. We don’t know which test you are referring to nor what they will accept (which will vary across their curriculum). Just give them a call.

That wasn’t my question. I’m planning on taking the College Algebra test and MSU does accept it. My main question is, would it serve as my math requirement.

Repeat, pick up the phone and call. As stated by @Erin’s Dad, depending upon your major it may or may not qualify.

I’ve been in contact with somebody from the admissions office through email and although they’ve been helpful with some of my questions, they haven’t been very helpful with this one. they keep telling me to sign up for one of their transfer sessions. I’ll try and give them a call and see if I can get any more information. Thanks.

I just got in touch with them, and they did verify that it will serve as my math requirement. Does anybody know if I will be able to manage studying for this test while taking 4 (15 Credits) other classes this semester? I think that as long as I’m dedicated to doing it, It will be feasible, although I don’t really know how difficult the test is, or what it consists of.

^ That will depend on how well you plan your work load and study time. It CAN be done. By you? We don’t know. If you really want to transfer and get out of the math requirement, that’s your incentive.

Are you going to need to take additional math classes at MSU? If so I’d be wary of trying to CLEP out, given you’ve said math is not your strong suit. Will self studying and testing out via CLEP give you a good enough foundation for subsequent math or science classes?
