Testing

Hi everyone. I just have a few questions and I’ve never began a discussion before. I’m looking to major in international affairs for possible work as a FSO. My reach schools are princeton and georgetown, targets are william and Mary, tufts, and amherst, and anchors are american, gettysburg, and George Washington university. I’ve taken the world history sat II (750) and have to take two more for georgetown. Which two should I take for IR? I took the act for the first time a month ago, and received a 30. English: 35 reading:34 math: 28 and science:24. My essay was a 10/12. Does georgetown take act with writing instead of the sat iis, and if so do I need to retake the act to increase the chances of admission?

Georgetown does NOT take the ACT with writing in place of subject tests. No matter whether you submit the ACT or SAT, you still have to submit three subject tests.

Retaking the ACT would probably be a good idea - SFS is very competitive, and it is really just your math and science scores dragging you down. I would say aim for a 32, but a 33+ would be even better. Science is honestly just reading, after you take a bunch of practice tests you learn how to cut through the nonsense they give you and get to the core of the information quickly, and math is probably just more prep, review and make sure you’re keeping good time. Possibly try the SAT if you have time.

I think that for IR a history subject test is nice, which you already have, and then a foreign language would also probably be a plus - definitely a valuable skill for IR. If you won’t do well on language, it’s more important to have a good score in a less relevant subject than <700 on a foreign language test. For the final one I would recommend whatever you do best on, be that Bio, Math II, Literature, Physics etc.

Good luck!

You’re really underestimating the fantastic applicant pool at Tufts and Amherst if you think an ACT score of 30 makes it a target school. LIke butterfreesnd said, try to get it up to a 32/33 so you’ll be competitive with standardized tests. Good luck!

It was first time taking it @tehspacetv with very little prep. I think there’s definitely a lot of room for improvement, and I’ll be taking the sat in May. The science test was just a timing issue  anyway thank you guys for all your help!

It’s really cool you’re applying to Tufts though, they have an amazing diplomacy graduate program.

It’s an amazing school, all of them really are! I should probably do one of those posts listing off my ECs, gpa, NMCS but I really just had to know about my testing situation!
