Texas 2010 Applicants

Who else is applying to be one of thousands of Texas's class of 2010? Feel free to share random info about yourself . . . or not.

Hi, I'm EuropeGirl, I live in Louisiana, but I've been a Texas fan all my life (hello, Houston! Dallas! Austin! Mexican food! Civilization!). For many years, it was only a regular trip to the flat metropolis of Houston (since then, my eyes have been opened to the serene, beautiful, and utopian Austin) that sustained me--just driving down Westheimer, eating at California Pizza Kitchen, EatZi's, shopping at the Galleria, Border's, Barnes and Noble. Originally, my dream, dream, dream school was Rice University, but after talking with some alums, I realized that a) I would never be able to get in and b) I wanted to go to a bigger school. It was really Rice/Houston that led me to UT.

Everytime I tell someone that my top pick is Texas, they inevitably say with a sigh, "Big school." I respond, "I'm happy to be a number. Anonymity is fine with me!" As I joke, to make the old biddes of the community fret about me, I sometimes add with a twinkle in my eye and a grin across my face, "25,000 boys!" Then their jaws drop, how could I, die-hard academic, think about the dating scene? Then I say, "Ah, no, just joking! Texas is a wonderful school because . . . "

I am dying for my acceptance/rejection letter. It is absolute agony waiting.

I have applied to COLA and plan to double major in German and Economics.

So, any other applicants out there in the void of cyberspace?

Wow, that was well-written! Your personality really comes through. :)

I'm from Houston, and my parents are alumni from Texas. I've pretty much always assumed I'd be attending UT just on that basis alone. But then came sophomore year, and PSAT testing led to hundreds of college letters being sent to my house...and I reconsidered...and reconsidered...and reconsidered. I changed my major several times; I thought about going out-of-state, from UCLA, to Wellesley, to NYU.

The more I thought about it, however, the more I realized that UT would probably be the best fit. It's a HUGE school, it's in a great location, it has a good reputation, and it's in-state (meaning the tuition is a good value and I'm not too far away from the parents).

I love the fact that there are so many people to meet and so many activities going on. I've been to the campus several times (and visited the website thousands of times, lol) and am so excited about the number of museums, exhibits, and lectures around campus. There's so much culture to enjoy.

Since I'm in the top 10%, they basically have to let me in. I've done the common app already, but am waiting for my new SAT to be scored and sent, and my rank to be sent. I'm so ready to be done with the process, but my school is a little slow...so it'll be December, most likely, before I can finally heave a sigh of relief.

I'm applying to COLA with a major in English. I don't want to declare a minor yet; I'll probably wait that one out. I'm going to be a secondary-school English teacher either in TX or CA. Maybe overseas? I have no idea, but I'm excited.

This is so much fun! Maccasweetie, you might have to wait a bit longer for your letter - I turned in my app on Sept. 19 and didn't find out until Nov. 4 ~ but that could just be because i turned it in so early and they hadn't yet started working on apps.

I live in Dallas, and have all my life. Both of my parents went to SMU. As I entered high school, I assumed that I would leave Texas for college - I had always complained about the climate, people, etc. forever and had always wanted to live somewhere on the East Coast.

As I began my college search in my junior year, I knew early on that I wanted to major in marketing. I visited Boston College, Georgetown, and UPenn (I'm a UU gay guy and I visited Catholic schools...why?). I've had a LOT of back and forth thought about the schools I'd like to attend. For a while, BC was the "only place for me." Then it was USC, and NOW IT IS UT!!!!After constant coercion from my mother to visit UT, my friend and I drove down in May. I got my acceptance letter on Friday!

I'll be honest - until about April, I had always talked down UT as "the big public school" and didn't really even think about it. I had always assumed I'd attend a private university because I go to a private high school. BUT- I LOOOOOVED IT!!!!! I even went back down in September to re-visit and spend the weekend w/ my friend and attend the huge lecture halls everyone has so frequently warned me about. This visit cemented the notion that I was in love with this university.

Everything about UT really does make sense for me - let me count the ways -
1. it is 3 hours from home (on a good day), and I can be close to my family; plus, my sister will be a freshman in high school next year and I'd love to be apart of her life.
2. it is, in total, $100,000 cheaper than the private schools I was looking at. while this may not affect many applicants, I have been so priveledged as to have formed an agreement w/ my parents - I can either go spend all my college money at a private university, or I can go to UT or get a scholarship somewhere else and use the leftover money for graduate school (which they otherwise wouldn't help me with) or for something else later in life (house down payment?)
3. i will be close to my friends, and a few of my close friends are going to UT; i also know lots of people there already
4. Austin is AMAZING - it's like the mecca I have always dreamed of - a great city, while still being able to be a Texan
5. Very important - #3 marketing program in the country, #5 undergraduate business school in the country. you can't beat that for 7K/year!
6. it's just a plain awesome school and i know i will always have new people to meet and someone to hang out with!

I am still applying to Boston University, WashU, and Yale. Yale's just for fun, but I have already done the applications and asked for recs and scholarship nomination forms...but in the meantime I'll be reserving housing at Dobie :-D

Texas is awesome! But the only downside is that I'll see practically my entire highschool there at UT...and the high school drama continues...

Hello from CoLam10 at Austin, TX.

Obviously UT is one of my choices for college, but I don't think I want to stick too close to home (its no more than a 25 minute drive to get to downtown). Just a personal preference, I believe it will do me good to appreciate what more there is in the world.

My family is typically military oriented; My father served in the army, as did my grandfather and greatuncle. My cousin graduated this year from USAFA. I'm expecting to continue the lineage not through pure drudgery of carrying out what is expected of me, but more so because this is what I want to do.

I attended the USAFA seminar during the summer and made it my #1 choice. I'm also applying to two other service academies: USMA, and USCGA. If I don't receive an appointment from any of these service academies, I will get my commission through the ROTC program at a civilian college.

I am currently at odds with choosing between UT and A&M. UT has a fair AFROTC program but an accredited engineering school, A&M has nationally accredited ROTC programs, but I'm not too sure their status for engineering school.

Thats about it. I'm still researching my major of preference, but its going to fall in between either EE, Aerospace Eng, or BioMed Eng. If I don't get in, I'll see yall at UT.

I would pick UT over A&M for engineering anyday.

Yeah, pick UT for engineering over A&M.

Good luck guys, Austin is a wonderful place and so far the Longhorns have been undefeated this year!!! hook 'em!

Hello! I'm a 17 year old girl from Houston.

This summer I researched heavily on schools all over the US and UT ending up being one of the final 6 based on the criteria I was using. Then sometime ago I went into a "Chemical engineering is my dream occupation" phase. Out of those 6, UT had the best chemical engineering ugrad program by far so that basically eliminated the other 5. And then later I changed my mind to just chemistry and now it's either chemistry or pharmacy. Not sure at the moment. But that turned out okay cuz UT has awesome departments in both chemistry and pharmacy also! Then I went back to analyzing the other colleges and saw that UT would really be a good choice for me.

Exceptional departments in chemistry (in top 15 I think) and pharmacy (2nd in the nation!), my prospective academic studies.

Wonderful research opportunities but you have to go find them yourself. No one is going to baby you, which I prefer.

Cheaper than the other schools I was looking at!! Big plus

Liberal campus! I would NOT enjoy going to a conservative school for personal reasons. (No offense to conservatives)

Close to home. Less on the travel expenses.

Has at least one very active martial arts organization (Wushu). Smaller schools might not even have one.

Although, one thing I do not like is the large the drinking scene.
