Texas A&M Admission Question and Chances

Question
Can you be an "Academic Admit" if your high school doesn't rank?
My school doesn't rank students or weigh GPAs, but sends a school profile to colleges instead.

I'm interested in getting a BA in Petroleum Engineering from Texas A&M.
I just finished my junior year. I attend a really competitive high school in NY (Ranked 2nd in NY, USNews).

GPA: 3.3-3.4
SAT: 1340 (2030/2400). I plan to take the ACT and get a 32+, as well as retake my SAT to get 1400-1500.

I just want a general opinion of my chances from a numeric standpoint. I usually wouldn't ask about this since my school provides college admission statistics every year, but the problem is nobody from my school applied to Texas A&M.

I don't know if I'm allowed to ask this in a Texas A&M thread, but can someone recommend other colleges that are very good for Petroleum engineering if this college is out of my reach? I know Penn State has an okay one and is closer. If it helps for an admission's comparison, my school had an 92% acceptance rate (65/71) to Penn State for 2012-2013. The average GPA for student's accepted was 3.3.

The academic admit part is mainly for Texas residents. Non-residents are judged separately and there are not many seats at A&M for non-residents.

Page 3 shows there are only about 3 percent OOS students who are undergrads at A&M or about 300 students each year.

Texas has several schools that are good for Petroleum Engineering. I think University of Houston would come after UT and A&M. You may even get some money from them.

I believe oos applicants can be admitted under academic admit policy:

[Academic Admits](http://admissions.tamu.edu/freshmen/gettingin/waysAdmitted/academic.aspx)

OOS cannot be admitted under the top 10% rule.

Perazziman - The link above does not seem to say anything about OOS?

Is it something published somewhere?

Thanks for the responses. My knowledge is OOS applicants can be admitted under academic admit policy. I’d like to know, chances wise, is it still worth applying to TAMU?

Apply no matter what.

texaspg, My son was in state when he applied, so I never looked for an official policy, but I did see posts from oos students who got in under the academic admit policy.

TBBxsci, As far as class rank is concerned I believe your school will have to furnish its profile to A&M and the college will estimate your class rank:

[Required Documents for the Freshman Application](http://admissions.tamu.edu/freshmen/gettingin/reqDocuments/definitions.aspx)

Honestly speaking, if TAMU tries to estimate my class rank it would probably hurt my chances. Also, if the earliest time I can apply is September-October, what are the chances that Petroleum Engineering seats are still available? Can I get some other opinions as to my chances of getting in?

Go ahead and apply. Your chances are small due to GPA and the test score could be a little better. Getting into Petroleum Engineering late will also be more difficult. Many in-state kids apply the first few weeks the application is open.

You will never know unless you try.

Why can you not apply earlier?

I don’t think I’ll be able to get all the required and recommended documents ready until my senior year starts, which is in September. Will my chances be much less if I applied midway through September?
