Texas A&M - College Station, and UT Austin (My chances)

Hello!

So recently I took my in school SAT now I’m very worried if I will be accepted from any colleges, mainly Texas A&M College Station and UT Austin.

Going to College Station has always been my dream, I love A&M!, the problem is my SAT score came out to be: 1980, my parents have told me, I have a very little chance getting into any of those colleges as my class rank is 56/145 and my GPA is 3.5 (Unweighted) and 3.6 (Weighted.)

So, do you guys think I have a chance in any of the two colleges? I mainly really would want to attend Texas A&M.

(PS: - I’m a Junior graduating Junior year in June.)

  • Thank you!

My exact GPA is 3.50 unweighed, and 3.68 weighed

I don’t think you will get in to UT Austin. You have a chance for A&M. I got in with a 3.2 unweighted GPA (3.7 weighted). I wasn’t even in the top 25% of my class. That being said, I did get a 2100 (1440 CR+M) on the SAT. I also made National Merit Semifinalist so that may have helped me.

Drycool11 - it could be tough to get into Texas A&M but don’t give up hope. I agree that if you are not in the top 10% of your class that UT will be a stretch BUT, and this is a big BUT, your major of choice will play a huge role, as will factors such as whether you are a first generation college student (meaning your parents did not graduate from college) and your ethnicity/gender. And you have time to retake that SAT several more times before your applications are complete and could raise your score quite a bit in that time so don’t give up! And most importantly remember that if you do your first year at a local community college and make a 4.0, that both schools will likely welcome you with open arms as a transfer! Best of luck!

I definitely agree with the transfer option. You could go to a community college & save money. While there get that GPA up to 3.7+, take honors classes, & make sure you get accepted into Phi Theta Kappa. All of that should make a considerable impact in your opportunity to transfer. Texas A&M did a special presentation for the PTK chapter of the community college I attended and the main guy flat out said, “If you are in this room you are in the top percentile of students in this college. If you are in this room, we want you at A&M. Fill out a transfer application & we WILL make you an offer.” That’s what first got me interested in the possibility of transferring out. I’m also a first generation college student, & an older one at that. Yet, there were numerous opportunities available to me. I chose Texas Tech simply because they offered me a transfer scholarship plus a job. You should strongly consider doing a CC & transferring out.
