Texas A&M or UT for chemical engineering?

I’m just wondering which to choose

Both will be fine. Is one less expensive?

Are you instate? Are you an auto-admit to both?

What are your stats?

I am assuming you are an auto admit. In which case both the engineering programs at UT and A&M are great programs, and both will look good to employers and grad schools. However it will come down to 1. Which one will be cheaper and 2. What type of environment you prefer. I have visited UT before and can tell you it is much different than A&M. Different types of students, with A&M having more of a southern image while UT is liberal as hell. Of course those are generalizations, however it depends on what type of person you are and where you think you will fit in. Also, I am not sure about A&M but but UT’s Cockrell School of Engineering is NOT part of UTs auto admit. You must apply there and can be rejected.

@JoseAMendez Yeah, thank you! I’m debating on which one to go too, all of my siblings are Aggies… But I heard there was more opportunities that you would receive from a&m than UT when you graduate

@mom2collegekids I am both, I got a 1760 on my SAT with a 650 in math and 530 in reading (it’s my weak point). I am in the top 2 percent of my school

@“Erin’s Dad” A&M is cheaper than UT, but I’ve heard that once graduated, UT offers more opportunities

If you apply early, you will get into A&M Engineering. Remember auto-admits get in but majors are assigned first come first serve.

At UT, your SAT scores are not going to be very competitive for Engineering. They look at math and writing plus your rank and your writing is low. Your rank is excellent though and rank is weighted pretty heavily in the formula. You will get into undergraduate studies even if you don’t get into engineering.

As far as more opportunities, I don’t think that UT has more opportunities than A&M. Companies recruit at both schools. A&M graduates way too many engineers for companies to skip recruiting there.

It will likely come down to where you get in to your major and which you like better and of course which offers you more aid. Your scores are low for merit aid, but you may qualify for needs based aid.

Good luck!

@gettingschooled yeah, I think I’m going to go to A&M anyways because my parents don’t want to pay for UT and I sent in my application yesterday!

I got a graduate degree at TAMU. Enjoy the global camaraderie; I now live several states away (not a TX native either). With your college degree, you may stay in TX with a lot of job opportunities.

Good luck with finishing HS and the college adventure. TAMU has a wonderful campus vibe.

DD is in another SEC school eng program, however only some of the band will come to the match up at College Station this year. She wants to go and see the school and the stadium.

I was happy when TAMU joined the SEC.

Be sure to get involved outside of academics for a balanced life.

I agree. I doubt that there are more ChemE opps for UT grads over TAMU grads.

Your M SAT is weak for eng’g. How strong of a math student are you? Are you taking AP Calc this year?

@SOSConcern I will and thank you for the advice!

@mom2coIIegekids I know, I reached the minimum. Well, I think I can label myself as the type of individual who can learn math easily, once I get the hang of it and actually focus. Yes, I am taking AP Calc AB. However, I really wish my school had BC!!
