I decided this process with A&M is all like a bad boyfriend…he was great in the beginning— everything you ever wanted… enthralls and seduces you, gets you to commit, strings you along, asks someone else to dance right in front of you, feeling dumped but not quite sure, comes back with false promises, commits to someone else behind your back (you only found out when you went to the portal), comes back and swears their undying want for you, strings you along some more, ghosts you for months on end, comes back just in time to thwart you from other commitments, tells your friend they really do like you, but, come to think of it, now thinks they may like the friend too, strings you both along (but, only in the portal), brought the friend an extra something to convince her to hang on… in the end, tells you both they gotta go but maybe you can meet in another town and/or ‘get-together’ next year…!!!
Either way, one of the most unhealthy relationships my daughter has ever had… but, guess she’s learned a lot and so, there’s that… and sadly, she’s one of thousands, this has happened to. Of all of ‘those’ we know, eight students are going of state, now… good job Texas A&M you haven’t done anyone any favors including the rest of your higher-education peers— but, then again maybe that’s a bad boyfriend’s plan, all along…
My son received the PSA option this morning. Off to Arkansas he goes. Is there any advice if he wants to try to transfer after his freshman year? He’s going into college with 33 hours of AP/DC, and my understanding is that you can’t have more than 60 hours of credits to get into Mays which is where he’d want to be. Should he just talk to an admissions counselor at Mays? Would it even be worth the effort since they don’t accept many transfers?
@Bhawk103 shocked is an understatement. I am so sorry.
Has he been admitted to Walton Business? If so, that’s an outstanding program! Does he plan on rushing a fraternity, or joining another club/org? Lots of things to think about.
Personally, I’d send my kid to UArk and tell to him to jump in 110%, get fully involved and not look back…but every kid is different.
Here’s the link for transferring, scroll down to #2, Transfer from other universities.
Thanks! I’ve been reading through that already, and I worry about the part where they don’t accept Spring grades which means he’d have to satisfy all the criteria by this Fall if he wants to try and get in for Fall 2023. Yes, he’s been accepted to the School of Business at Arkansas, and he received the in-state tuition scholarship. He’s not into Greek life, and that’s one of our major concerns. I just don’t know that that’s where his people are. He’s definitely an Aggie soul. We’re going to give him some time to cool down over the weekend then discuss options. We need to go visit the campus now that it’s a very real option. Up until this point it was just a back-up plan we thought he wouldn’t need.
@Bhawk103 is he an outdoorsy guy? Hard to pass up the beautiful area of Arkansas where campus is located. I’d do research on Walton Business, see what all they offer, make a campus visit asap, try to squeeze in a baseball game while you’re there, to get the feel of students.
@ChristiR93 can give you the deets about trying to transfer from another university-timeline, what’s required, etc.
Yes, he’s very outdoorsy. The distance to AR is a fairly substantial issue. One big problem, among other things, is he has a job that requires him to be in Dallas some. And most of time it’s during the week, so it would be easier to drive from CSTAT. Just another thing he has to consider. I just told him to look at the baseball schedule. That’s a good idea to catch a game while we visit. Thanks!
I hope you can combine a campus tour & baseball game on the same visit.
Have you looked into PSA Econ at Commerce or Tarleton? Those are both driveable to Dallas. PSA would be a 1 year, direct pathway into TAMU.
Or straight PTA from Blinn.
Again, lots of factors. Does he want to go away, attend a real real, big school university-SEC sports, the full freshman experience, live in a dorm etc. Would he be okay with starting out at PSA school, or okay with Blinn, not having access to anything A&M? Does he only want a Business degree, is he willing to go Econ route?
Like I said, every kid is different. Lots of things to list on a spreadsheet.
Me too! Thanks for the idea. He wants to go to a school with a big football program, play intramurals, enjoy the social scene, get that true freshman experience, make tons of friends, and get a good education…all of which can be achieved at Arkansas. He’s a very outgoing individual but definitely not the Greek type. We’re going to discuss the PTA route, but I worry about it because of only being able to transfer in in the Summer or Fall and them not counting Spring classes in the application process but having to meet certain requirements with classes that he doesn’t have yet. He’s considered the Communications route because ultimately he wants to do sales/marketing and I’ve read on A&Ms website that many kids that go that route end up doing sales/marketing, so it’s a possible option. Econ was his second major option but not really what he wants to do. He’s got a true sales personality. Thanks for picking my brain and giving us lots to consider!
Assuming he passes his AP Biology exam this Spring he’ll have 33 DC/AP hours. 21 of those are DC in which he has a 4.0 GPA. He hasn’t taken the Econ or Math classes yet, so that’s my concern. Is there any possible way he could try to transfer in next Fall? Seems he has to complete certain classes by this Fall which would mean 2 Econ classes and 2 math classes if I’m understanding correctly. He has taken the English Class already. I don’t think the DC maths he’s taken (College Algebra and Stats) count towards the transfer requirement.
@ChristiR93 Do you think they give more weight to students that stay in Texas or even go to Blinn and try to transfer in vs. going to Arkansas? Do you know what other classes he needs besides the 2 maths and the 2 Econs? He has the English requirement with DC and a few others listed for the first year core classes, but I can’t tell what else he needs before applying. If he decides he wants to try to transfer in we’ll talk to an Admissions counselor, but I appreciate your insight.
Here’s a screenshot of what’s required for transfer. As for blinn vs u of ark, they say they don’t care but I would say a 4 year university bodes well. Rigor is harder than juco.
@ChristiR93 how does CLEP exam work? Both Econs are available, for @Bhawk103 son.
Do they have to be already admitted A&M students to take/receive the credit? Would CLEP credit even count towards transfer requirements?
My daughter is at Texas Tech this year and is interested in transferring to A&M. Local Dallas office (transfer rep) was very helpful…she met with him this week while home on Spring Break. Might be worth logging on to their website and making an appointment.
