Texas A&M

Howdy! I've been wanting to go to Texas A&M all my life and am not at a point where I can finally get in... but I also want to major in Architecture. A&M isnt exactly known for its Artsy stuff, but I've seen it listed on the Design Intelligence lists (which I perceive to be somewhat mis-informing). I know Rice is exceptional, and so is t.u. (texas university at austin), but I'll be damned if go there! Haha, anyways, I'd like to get a feel of how credible A&M is. Also, if I were to get a degree in construction science and get a M.Arch say 10 years later, would that be a plus or minus in the employers eyes?

Thanks,
AustinRoach

PS-Yes.... I do realize I'm an Aggie fan with the name Austin... my parents were Aggies and decided to play a cruel joke on me :P

Austin, I appreciate the fact that you love A&M, but you might want to consider other options. The construction management school is very good, and the graduates are in high demand. However architects and contractors really do have a very different world view, and it is a very rare person that feels comfortable in both roles. I have been involved with the A&M design build studio, where architects and construction management students work together on a project, and I am amazed at how early the construction vs. architecture mindset begins to emerge.

In Texas both Rice and UT have really good programs, UT Arlington is not far behind, and Texas Tech is really coming on. The only program at A&M that I would consider really outstanding is their MArch in healthcare design, which is one of the best in the country. I would look around and not let your love for A&M get in the way of getting the best education.

Good luck,
rick

BTW; I am not a UT grad ;-)
