Texas Grant :)

Has any CAP student received this? just checking... I got it at A&M and am waiting to see if I get it at UT Dallas CAP.

But so if I do receive this at UT Dallas, will it transfer over into the next year at UT Austin as long as my EFC doesn't change to over $4000?

are all government based grants pretty much the same at different colleges?

The whopping $6,000 will help me lots if so

If the TEXAS Grant gets continued funding (at the mercy of the Tx Leg.) and you complete at least 24 credits with at least 75% completion rate, have a gpa of at least 2.5 during 10-11 and submit next year’s FAFSA by March 1, 2011 (send it earlier to be safe!), you should receive the grant at UT the following year.
Although eligibility for grants will be the same at all state schools, some grants have limited funding and may be offered to different percentages of eligible students at different schools.

not necessarily, because if UT runs out of Texas Grant funds then you wont get it. That is why alot of people didnt get it this year, they go from low efc to high, so just hope they get to you, btw its a great grant

UT ran out of money around the 2500 EFC mark. It stinks that other institutions are giving it out to those with higher EFCs.

2,500 EFC?! Wow. o.o

my EFC was 0 this year… so hopefully ill still make it next year…

does anyone know how easily does EFC change compared to increase in annual income?

@zlc : what do u mean by mercy of TX leg? shold i be worried that they may change it or they are debating about it?

@etceterae other institutions have less students applying

The Texas Legislature meets every 2 years and determines if/how much the various programs will be funded.
man… i found out ut dallas will only give me 3,000 for the texas grant.
is it because my fafsa came in late you think, or ut dallas just gives only 3000?

so does anyone know how much ut austin awards if you recieve their texas grant?

@dae idk why they only gave you 6k, maybe they’re splitting it up or something.

Call the FA office and see why you only got 3k.

at most schools its 6k

oh okay ill ask them.

so ut austin normally gives 6k then?

thanks :D

The Texas Grant is awarded at an amount that will fully cover your tuition & fees when combined with a Texas Public Education Grant. But, it has to fit within your “need”. If you have other grants and scholarships, the Texas Grant may have to be reduced. Does your UTD award include other aid (in addition to Pell)? If so, that could explain the difference in the Texas Grant award amount. Also, be sure you are looking at the annual and not the semester amounts.

Oops! Meant to add that the Texas Grant amount is set by the state, not the university. For 0910 , it was $6080, for 1011, it is $6780.

yeah it was 3000 per year.
so is something wrong then?
is the university allowed to change the amount you receive, (not counting the reason that it goes over ur budget)

i hope i wont run into these problems when i go to ut. …

Unless you have a 0 EFC, your “Need” (COA minus EFC) is less than your budget.

Also, the amount for community and junior colleges is less.

my efc is 0 and utd is a regular university. should i ask them about this?

Yes. With a 0 EFC, unless you are receiving other grants and scholarships (in addition to the Pell) that meet your full COA, you should receive the full $6780. However, be aware that many schools wait until they see your final HS transcript (that confirms that you completed the recommended or distinguished program) before awarding the Texas Grant.

Are you sure it is the TEXAS Grant, and not a Texas Public Education Grant? Those are 2 different grants.

oh my gosh! maybe it is the texas public education grant!

should i ask them what happened to my texas grant then?

i just received an email from my financial aid counselor and she told me that I was talking about the wrong grant! you were totally right!!!

so maybe i will be getting the 6,780. oh man that would help ALOT!

THANK YOU for your clarification!

but she said something about it depends if UT dallas awards the texas grant this year? does anyone know about this. can colleges just choose to not use it for one year?

More students qualify than there are funds for. My school awards the grant to eligible students 1st come, 1st served. I think UT awards it in order of the lowest EFC. Last year, my school was only able to award eligible (initial year) students who submitted the FAFSA by Feb 22. All renewal students who submitted the FAFSA by March 1 received the renewal grant (different funds).
Some financial aid counselors may not know the dates and dollars for next year yet because the THECB is not great about updating schools or the College for Texans website quickly. It has been a challenging year for financial aid folks across the country due to very recent changes in federal financial aid. During the time we generally start awarding for the upcoming year, congress passed a new bill, so all of our software became obsolete. Processing came to a screeching halt while we waited for software updates. In addition, many offices are short-staffed due to hiring freezes in all state agencies (including colleges).
