Texas Medical Schools

There is no thread on Texas medical schools, so I thought I should make one because, obviously Texas is the place to be if one is looking for cheap med schools that are of good to great quality and ranking and if a Texas resident wants to stay in Texas (Texas state med schools require 90% of the class to be made up of Texas residents).

I'll start off with a question: How are students from UT Austin viewed when they apply to Texas state medical schools (particularly UT-Southwestern, but we could talk about Baylor too, which might be more interesting since it's a private but has a majority of Texas residents). Are UT students compared to other Texas residents, other UT applicants, or in terms of everyone who applies (including out of state)?

UTA is a fine school. However, as you well know, it is your personal qualities, not the name of your school, that gets you into medical school. UTA is well known by all of the UT medical schools, and so you can be assured that they will be able to accurately evaluate your application relative to the intrinsic quality of applications from any top OOS schools.

UTA? The question was about UT. UTA is University of Texas at Arlington, which is a far cry from UT.

I’d love to hear more from anyone? My son has UT as his safety, and he’d ultimately like to go to med school and then live in Texas. Is it best yo just go to UT, or should he pursue a higher-ranked undergrad school?

Im applying to University of Houston for undergraduate studies. Will gonna be doing pre med! I love Baylor College of Medicine for some reason! Would UH put me at a disadvantage when it comes to getting accepted at Baylor (obviously assuming my GPA and MCAT are stellar and I have ECs under my belt)! Anyone care to help me out here!

Just do well in college and you should be fine.
There are a few people in the MS1 class right now from UH.

no body in the admissions office cares where you got your undergrad
what matters is your cGPA, sGPA, MCAT, & extracurriculars

There are 8 students from Debakey high school each year that attend UH with an admission to BCM.

Wao thanks for all your feedback guys! It really helps me getting feedback from people who with experience. I honestly believe UH is my best choice, not to mention the amount of extracurricular opportunities in Houston! Sorry texaspg, unfortunately Im not coming from Debakey high school!

I’m curious about the OP’s question, too. I’m a sophomore at UT, and was wondering about the likeliness of getting into Baylor or Southwestern. Is there a suggested GPA/MCAT score? What about for (chemical) engineers?
