Texas public universities plus Oklahoma and Arkansas?

My son:

  1. top 5 public high school in Dallas-Fort Worth.
  2. GPA: 3.85
  3. class rank: top 23%
  4. PSAT: 1600
  5. extracurricular: football team (kicker/punter), club soccer (travel team), and three church mission trips to a small village in Haiti

We’re just starting the process. Looking at Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, North Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. Any idea what looks possible?

I forgot … he’ll also have about 10 honors classes plus 4 AP classes.

Is your son a rising junior or a rising senior?
Current PSAT scale is max 1520. Please update (may matter for scholarships)
What are his SAT, SAT II and/or ACT scores?
Is the GPA weighted or unweighted? What is the scale (e.g. 3.85/4.0)?
Does he qualify for the top 10% rule, or could he after junior year (if a rising junior)?
What are his interests?
Budget? You might also look at private schools because FA can make costs similar to public ones.

Need a lot more info. What the prior poster said, plus… Are there any EC’s besides those (should be in NHS with the courseload and GPA)? Student Council? Anything like that? Has he received any awards or recognition for any of his interests/passions? Would he be recruited to college for sports? Intended major?

He’s a rising junior. I believe his SAT score would be about 1060, but he’s only taken the PSAT. The 3.85 GPA is weighted; he gets extra credit for the honors classes & AP classes. No, he’s not top 10%; he’s top 23% at one the most competitive high schools in DFW. The high school has four academic “tracks”, and he is on the highest (most difficult) track. His interests are football and soccer. He could possibly qualify for a football scholarship, but that’s not certain. He wants to major in business.

From what we’ve seen so far, Texas Tech appears to be ideal. Very close are Oklahoma and North Texas. Thoughts?

I believe you meant 1600 for the SAT score in your last comment. Texas Tech would seem to be a match. The SAT score is just below the median line and the GPA is about Texas Tech level. Oklahoma is probably a match also, even though they are a bit more selective (especially being OOS). North Texas would be a safety. Texas Tech seems to be the most ideal match to me, but that decision is up to you.

Thanks. Maybe OU as a slight reach, Tech as most likely, and North Texas as a safety. I really don’t see a big difference between Tech and North Texas.

North Texas isn’t near as prestigious. Check out the admissions stats. Tech is a far better school as far as its students are concerned.

Aren’t the SAT’s about the same? Maybe the class rank is much better at Tech. Tech is our first choice.

All he has for EC’s are: 1) the football team, 2) travel soccer team, and 3) three mission trips to a village in Haiti. Any recommendation on what else he can do? His graduating class is almost 1,500 students, so it’s difficult to be class president, etc.
