I was curious about the process to becoming a TX resident from OOS. One of my friends is currently in the process of doing this. I recently received my FA letter from UIUC, which basically state that even though I am really only able to pay half the Cost of attendance (as per their calculation), they are not going to give me any scholarships - only loans. I guess that is the curse of being a middle-class family. This leads me to assume that I won't get money from UT Austin either. Thus, I'd really like to know more about the TX residency process.

Can someone outline it to me?

Also, does renting a property count towards residency or only buying?

Have to live in tx for a year…You can apply for out or state tuition waver I think. I believe that’s based on grades I’m not sure exactly how that works… And also if your a depended and the person who claims you had residency in Texas than you can be a resident

alrite. So is it theoretically possible for me to just like… rent the cheapest piece of real estate in austin, not live in it, and get state tuition starting sophomore year?

From the research we have done you need to be working and making money for at least 20 hours a week for 1 year and change your drivers license, register to vote in Texas, be living there for a year and your parents can’t claim you on their taxes. And the new thing is they want you somehow to show that the intent of living in Texas is not just to get in state tuition. For a freshman to work 20 hours a week that will be tough. If you find out something different please let me know. Good luck.

They have made it harder to get in-state residency the last couple of years. Before, you could buy real estate anywhere in Texas. It could be a $10,000 lot in west Texas. Now, however, you have to LIVE in the property you purchase. You should call the residency office to get details.

It is VERY hard to get a tuition waiver. For example, the school of engineering has only 7 or 8 waivers for all students (freshmen through seniors).
