Hi, current Txstate student here,
I just finished my first year at Txstate, I am a BS in Computer Science major, I am going to give you my honest opinion.
when I came into college I was expecting a higher level of thinking and intelligence from the students. I was completely wrong. The student body does not care about getting educated, even the students in my CS 1428 class (the intro CS class) were all loud and the classroom felt more like a zoo than a place to learn.
My professor just lectured over the textbook and that was it, he didn’t even try to make CS seem interesting, which IMO is sad, because CS is not boring if you show how cool it can be.
I am going to stay one more semester and then I am transferring to UTD, because I need to be around people who actually care.
if you read the textbook, you will get the information you need, but don’t expect the students or the professor or anybody else to help you, cause they don’t care enough to help you ACTUALLY understand the material. They just tell you random crap and could care less if it makes sense to you.
Txstate is also a greedy school, $485 for a parking permit for the entire year…
Txstate put on a front for potential students at orientation and everything they tell you is a complete lie. You will realize your mistake when it is too late… the school presents itself in a way to trick you.
if you haven’t toured the campus yet, do it, and judge for yourself.
Ask the tour guide questions, and demand answers, don’t let them just tell you stuff.
if cost is a big concern then transfer to UTSA (UTSA has a good Cyber Security program from what I hear).
but if you are able to afford UTD or UH or UT, then by all means, go to those schools, you will be better prepared.
the basics at the university level at Txstate are a joke, and i should have gone to CC first.
best of luck to you, in the end, do what you need to do to get the credits, but advance your own personal knowledge as much as you can with self study.
