Hi guys I had some questions about Texas States’ Musical Theater.

To start off Im am currently a Sophomore and I love Musical Theater and wanted to get my BFA in it. When do you audition? How hard is it to get in? What do they look for?
I was thinking in singing a song from the Phantom of the Opera (which is how i came to love MT).

I am very passionate about MT. I love it and would work hard everyday and sacrifice anything for it.

I also thought that when you enroll into the school you can choose it as an ‘elective’. Is it a separate program? Sorry I’m extremely confused. If you could please answer my questions I would be very appreciative.

We have heard great things about the MT faculty at TSU! My son is auditioning for them in Feb. You have audition to get into the MT department as far as we know. TSU only let’s a few in per year but we have heard it is a strong program!

Thank you! Also good luck to your son! I really wanna know if he makes it.

HI
You should check out all of the information on how to apply to the Texas State Musical Theatre program. Just google Texas State University Musical Theatre and you will find the proper links. It is an a BFA program and is very competitive. They usually select 12 -14 students per year ( about half male, half female) In order to audition you must submit a prescreening DVD and the instructions for this are also on their website.

Phantom of the Opera is wonderful, but I would not recommend it as a source for an audition song. You might want to look at some of the other MT schools and what they do (and do not) recommend as audition songs. In some cases the schools are very specific as to what they expect from an audition.

You must go into the audition very prepared. Many times students are not selected simply because they did not follow the guidelines.

Finally, you should look at all of the valuable information that can be found in College Confidential. It is a great resource

Hi there, I’m just finishing up my auditioning season and picking songs were really tough, but I would say Phantom is a beautiful show but definitely do not sing a song from it for auditions! Judging panels don’t want to hear overdone songs and they want to hear something unique that expresses who you are! go to this website–

Also, if you’re currently a sophomore and you do get accepted into the program, by auditioning only (and it is highly competitive), you would enter the program as a freshmen and start completely over.

Be sure to check out the MT forum here on College Conf. Texas State is a great program that was almost unheard of a few years ago. They have progressed to the point that they are very popular and it is very difficult to get accepted. MT has always been very competitive with many programs only taking 10 or 12 students per year, but it has become even more so recently. When you read the posts on the MT forum, you will see that many applicants apply to 15 or 20 programs just to make sure they get at least 1 acceptance. There are also different types of programs such as BA, BFA, audition, non-audition, etc. Since you are only a sophomore, you still have time to investigate various programs and decide which would be best fits for you. Auditions are held either at the specific school, or some schools hold auditions at a central auditioning venue (Unified auditions). Again, reading the forums here will get you up to speed.

Selections from Phantom would not be recommended for audition material. While beautiful, there are other selections that would allow you to show off your personality better. If you are not currently taking voice lessons, or don’t have access to someone more knowledgeable, it might be a good idea to find someone who could help you out. Also be aware that most auditions include a dance portion, so you need to have some dance under your belt. You still have time to do all of this, but you should start now. Spend some time reading the threads on the MT forum to familiarize yourself with requirements and then start planning.

Oh, and in answer to your question about MT being an elective, it is not (usually). It may sometimes be a concentration within a voice or theater major, but many schools actually have an MT major. In that case you enter the program as a Musical Theater major. There are some programs through which you would be accepted into a theater or voice major, and then must audition for MT in your sophomore or junior year. You can find all of this out by looking at the MT forum- Big List of MT Colleges.
